Clutch problems

John: Lots of assumptions/confusion on this thread. I think we need to start from basics here.
There are at least 5 different carriers available which will "fit" the Z. The position of the "ears" on the carrier for the clutch arm vary one to the other. I presume Rob gave you the carrier for the late 280zx clutch which requires the deeper 280zx clutch and 280zx slave cylinder.
What model slave cylinder are you using? Does your clutch pressure plate have a 9 bolt fixing ?
I'll try and put some measurements up for you.

I'm using the old 240z slave cylinder. How does this differ from 280zx one? Its appears that the slave cylinder does not have enough throw. Maybe I should be looking a the master cylinder displacement instead?

The trouble is I have 240, 260, and 280zx gearboxes, clutches and flywheels around but couldn't tell you which I have used for certain.

Apart from the early 240Z clutch slave cylinder with adjustable push rod (no longer available), all slave cylinders for S30 and S130 converge on the same part number. All the master cylinders use the same piston / seal kit, so no difference in volumetric efficiency in the hydraulics. Have you replaced either slave / master or both? They both deteriorate badly in storage and only get worse when you place working demands on them again...

Essentially there are only three carriers for the UK market:

30501-A8601 all 240Z and 260Z to 11/74 with -N3100 225mm pressure plate
30501-N1600 260Z from 12/74 to 09/75 with 225mm -N3110 pressure plate (no longer available, so most will have been converted by now)
30501-K0400 260Z 10/75 on and all 280ZX with 240mm pressure plate 6 and 9 bolt versions.

-K0400 supersedes to -K0401, then to -0H600 and finally to -K0404 which is the current number. Nissan have now confused the issue in that when ordering the latter, you don't get the longer carrier - right part number, wrong part in box...

Essentially if looking for secondhand, we are back to two carriers - 240Z short or late 260Z / 280ZX long.

The USA market confuses the issue as other clutch variants were available, but the UK market is (relatively) simple to understand.
