Bens 240z

The rebuild has finally finished following the very big accident that the car was involved in last season. For those of you that do not know the car it was the 240Z that Datsun Holland were running in the group 5 european sports car championship in the mid 1970s. Janspeed got involved in developing the car for the 1976 season and that is close to the trim that it is running in now bodywork wise. I have now got a 3.1 engine running on a slide throttle, fuel injection, fully mapped fuel and ignition engine management system that has been built, and is undergoing further developement by Neil Peters at Pride Race Engines. At the moment the engine is running in pretty mild tune but is producing very big smiles on both the drivers and engine builder. The engine is driveable from 2000rpm where it produces 200 ft lb of torque up to around 7500rpm with peak torque (270 ft lb)at 5500. Power figures are plenty high enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. First time out in the car produced some very encouraging results compared to last seasons times. 64 ft times of 2.13 seconds. 0 to 90mph in the 7 to 8 second bracket. All in a car that hasnt been running for over a year and a driver that hasnt been racing for 14 months. We plan to spend the next season running the car as is and collecting data to continue with the planned mods in the winter of 2006. As they say in the adverts, "the futures bright".

Brilliant Ben, this is a very historic car and its nice to see its on its way back to its former glory.

Was it not originally a turbocharged 430bhp monster??

Great to hear you are back on the road - or should that be back on the hill!
Hope to see you both soon

Off subject slightly, apart from Bens 240 and Big Sam, are there any other Zeds that were competitively raced/rallyed/hill climbed in Europe during the the production run (up to early 1980's)? I know there was the Monte Carlo car, and the Le Mans one, but what else was there, and do they survive today?

Cheers
Ian

Whoo Hoo

:eek:270 ft lbs @ 5500 you just gotta love fuel injection ehh :D :D :D
Jeepers I thought mine pumped out good torque 208 @ 6000 rpm that means you must be making ------ blimey big hp numbers.

Any chance of hinting at the hp Ben for comparison purposes, eg 3.1 with FI and managment verses 3.1 without, relevant only for those of us in the TB club of course :D :D :D :D

Did you go full distributorless ???

is that the sensor that fell off on the motorway and caused you to be on an AA relay relay truck last week ???? lol good old points!

No it wasnt the sensor it was the crank damper and trigger wheel close though.

Still, the price one pays to have a quick car.
Car will be fixed for October 9th with a competition damper not the poxy old "euro" damper.

Remind me though, Is yours going to make it to Santa pod in October Grolls? and if it does, being a 2+2 should it not have a calender fitted in place of a speedo or are we measuring your 1/4 times in ice ages these days:D.

yes we went distributorless although the dissy that you see on the engine is doing another job. 6 individual coils mounted on the plugs DTA management system (fully mapped ignition and fuel maps and data logging, traction control sensors on all four wheels with wet and dry maps and adjustable launch control. HP figures not optimised yet but big smiles:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
might have to see if we can fit in a drag meet next year.

as far as I know this is the only race car from the period still competing apart from rally cars

That's one hell of a motor Ben, I bet the car doesn't weigh much either! You specialise in hillclimbs/sprints, do you get on the tracks very often?

I remember seeing you and DJ at Goodwood a few years back, don't you fancy a track-day again to make use of the aerodynamic mods?

Anyway, good to see you and the car are back in action and stronger than ever!

well done Ben the car look great can't wait to see it for real, sounds like you've got all the adjustments required to tune it to perfection with mappable injection pulse widths and ignition timings etc a monster motor, looking at a class win next season then??

Nick..

Would like to do a track day but most tracks will not let me on unless the car is road legal, and the airfields are too long and too abrasive for the slicks. Car is really set up for hills now and a short sprint circuit. Fuel consumption and tank size decides where I can run. 1 and a bit litres of fuel to run a competitive 1000yards and only 9 litre tank even rules out a 2 lap practice at coombe.
Wieght wise yes the car is well below 1000kgs.
The aerodynamic mods get used to good effect on the hills as well both at low and high speeds.
thanks for the favourable comments ben

Ben sounds great, glad to hear its back together!!

Have to take it to the POD, it should be made a crime for you not to. I think it would be :D

Sounds great, got to love the torque of stroked motors.

of course you could always see it run at Gurston next weekend 10th/11th Sept where two zeds will be competing. Trouble with Pod is that it always seems to clash with the Gurston meets, but will try to get there a warm welcome as always will be shown to all who manage to get to Gurston to give support.

Ben,

You’ve created yourself a super car (again)!!! Looks mighty nice probably runs like hell!?
I bet you are satisfied…and proud too :D

hi guus yes it certainly is getting to where i want it. Just need to get more driving time testing over the winter and then we can have some fun next season. I am really sorry that we could not have the car ready to come over to assen this year but thats racing for you.Nice to see that you have had your car out. look forward to seeing it as we hope to come over to holland next year for holiday. could you say hi to jos for me as i have lost his email address cheers ben
