Anyone know what this 'sensor' is in the boot ?

My 1976 280Z has what I think is a sensor screwed to the boot floor on the nearside. It is factory as it has a little metal shroud over it but I can't make my mind up what it does. Please can anyone tell me ?
At first I thought it was a fuel cut off, in case of a collision but it doesn't have a rest on it so can't be that. Electrics 1.JPG

Looks a bit like the thermal cut out sensors fitted to washing machines a few years back.

It is the floor temp sensor above the exhaust.
There should be a warning light on the dash centre panel above the heater controls.

Is that above the cat? I'm surprised it's so far back.

No, it is above the back box.

Never heard of that on any car!

It’s a floor temp sensor that according to Haynes is only fitted to California models. It goes to a relay but trying to read the wiring diagram is impossible.

    Here is a simplified version:

It basically warns if the cat is getting too hot from either engine problems or spirited driving, based on the temperature of the floor above the back box.
It's certainly not going to be the most accurate means of ascertaining cat temperature.

Thank you all, I was confident the answer would pop up and it did. That's what the forum is all about. Mind you, now I know what it is I am not sure it will change anything what so ever but it's nice to know.
