Hello guys im presently looking at upgrading my front brakes and been reading the thread with interrest, ive looked on ebay peugeot 505 gti vented front discs are in abundance priced around £60, some one mentioned machining costs? what machining is required, and what year range rover caliper is needed, also available of ebay, is the bolt pattern the same, is it a case of buy discs have them machined and then a straight fit with any year range rover caliper, rob mentioned brake pads needing fileing down, is this a problem, also im using toyota calipers at the moment on standard discs, ok but showing there age, so would like to upgrade, any information would be appreciated regards heath

Quick reply:

Chevy..... the Pug discs have to be machined to open up the centre hole for the Datsun hub. Also the wheel stud hole spacing has to be provided, so more holes.

Pads - I'm using Mintex, others may be ok (but I doubt it). I could move my caliper but don't like slotting the strut/caliper holes to do so.

If I upgrade, my set-up will be for sale. The RR system is ok for a road car but not hi-tech enough for my track work anymore.

Easiest thing would be a DJ kit I suppose.

However going back to my original question it doesn't seem there is a bigger disc unless I get one specially made (I wouldn't do that).

The DJ set-up is fabulous and has served me well - I can't imagine why anyone would want heavy kit on the front wheels !

What I'm sorting out is a lightweight kit (on vented discs - the first upgrade to do) that'll work under 14" wheels.

Both kits above are bolt-on - no machining.

Sean when you say under 14" wheels what wheels wont fit??? my 14 wolfys fit on my toyota and pug discs and my rear discs fit 14s too???????

Martin, my 14" Wolfrace wont fit over my RR calipers without spacers. However I'm leaning towards my 15" wheels more these days.

I'm talking about an alternative to RR and Hilux calipers - it's not the disc size that runs into problems but the calipers.
Back in '91 I had 280ZX front vented discs and calipers and a 280ZX brake master cylinder - alright on a mildy tuned car but above that and one needs some more biting power.

Long ago the RR conversion was done (Samuri) then the Hilux alternative came along but these are compromises.
They're heavy so if you enjoy semi-serious track-days, the heavier weight on each front corner doesn't help. Hilux calipers have other advantages known to pros but most of us out there have chosen them for their cheapness.

They ARE a compromise and with most of these 'kits', they need fiddling with which is obvioulsy fine if you're that way inclined and/or enjoy so playing.

Don't get me wrong chaps, they're fine..........but in my opinion, they're limited and an outdated option.

I'm working on this 'cos over here, a lot of owners don't want to go down the 15" wheel route. I have Minilite 8x15s and my DJ set up has lasted several hard track-days with one of them going on 2 1/2 hrs straight (no pauses) flat-out, no fading - just efficiency.

But not everyone can or wants to spend that and not everyone wants to have to spend out on a new set of wheels and tyres merely to have to spend out more on another set of brakes.

Hence the alternative........(s).
