A few more pictures for anyone who is interested in these cars.... The red one with the LY engine certainly has a very "upmarket" feel, almost like a gentleman's GT car. It has been very tastefully done indeed but still retains the ability to behave like a hooligan's car when driven hard.

Without wanting to be shot down - the wooden heater console (albeit well executed) looks completely out of place and the door-card pad (to hide the electric window mechanism

I guess could have been done more 'sypathetically'. The rest looks like most modern fast GTs done now ie 15 years later - Astons, Maseratis etc and looks great - just need me to find a herd and a pair of scissors.......

Ditto - be nice to see and hear 'em again at some Z events !!!!!

Yeah, I thought that looks a bit pants - would have tied in better if the dash had been trimmed.

There are bound to be bits that some of us love and some of us dislike, after all, this car was built to a "personal taste". We would all love the ability to build our own vision and I guess this was his at the time.

Personally I love the colour, like the cream connolly interior and would love an LY, however, will have to make do with what I can afford like everyone else.

Whether you love it or hate it, you have to admit that all these years on from when the cars were built, they still provoke a reaction, discussion, dare I say even jealousy ? That cannot be a bad thing, it shows that they were individual and way way above the reach of us mere mortals.

Great pictures. Are there any pictures of the blue or green one for those of us not lucky enought to receive the magazine.

What car is the donor?

Ahaha, if it were only that simple there would be plenty about however if you look at previous post in the thread, the cost (alluded to earlier) hints at the rareness and unusal nature of the LY
The LY that is in the fourways car is one of the only ones in the country (two known and a 3rd head suspected to exist),

The LY was a 12 valve crossflow head arrangement that "bolted" onto the L series block but requird a change in many of the internals such as rods pistons. crank etc and was made in limited numbers (less than 100) by Nissan in the 70's..... (group 4 homologation) in built up form it can fetch ridiculous amounts of money £25 - £30K

Not to be confused with the S20 (6 cylinder 2 litre) which was 24 valve crossflow

Which in turn should not be confusd with the L20 which was a 2 litre single overhead cam

Or the legendary OS-Giken TC24 (Twin cam "head") that is rarer than carbon fibre hens teeth.

Just wondered if someone knows that they have 25K sat here ?

Geoff knows exactly what the LY head is worth, he has been around Z's for a very very long time.

The question I guess is if any one of us could actually afford one would we pay that sort of money or would we get a modern engine built, ie a Dave Jarman engine with ITBs ? I would love an LY but more from a historical and rarity point of view than a power one.

If I could afford it I still would not pay £25K for one though

As the quote goes..."luck has nothing to do with it" ! Pay your dues, get yer mag. :)

I agree with ZHead - even if I had £25k to spend on one, I wouldn't !

But that one didn't cost that much or the total price of the red car was seriously understated ;)

If I could afford it, I'd pay £25k for it. It's all relative isn't it - things are only expensive if you can't afford them.

I'd have it for shear wank factor and historic significance. Comparing against what you could get for the same money / modern power is missing the point.
I'd still stick TB's on it though :)

I see where you're coming from re 'expensive' but still.......if I had that to spend on an engine head, I'd save up a bit more and get the OS Giken unit !

James had this engine head and he got no W factor from it - did The Z Club queue up to say 'ohh-arr'...?

And what historical significance ? I thought that Nissan effectively dropped all further N/A development of the L series once the cars were winning in the States on SOHC heads ?

TBs would be a better use of some of your £25k but could ruin the period effect...?

Yes, the OS Giken head would be the way for ultimate L-series power.

As the LY was generally only found on works cars, I think it is a historically significant head.

Personally if I fitted the LY head, I wouldn't be doing it for any kind of period effect unless it was going in a historically significant vehicle.
