Hi all, as above...should the window wind all the way into the door ?....I have about 2" that remains exposed...wondering if I need to lube/examine the mechanism inside the door...of if this the maximum movement ?

If you look inside the bottom of the door, you should see a small pedestal with a rubberised 'U' shaped block sitting on top of it. That's the Down Stopper, so the mechanism should allow you to wind down until you hit that stopper.
What often happens is that the felted window channel deteriorates and collapses in on itself, with the glass hitting this like a stop. It's a pain, but sometimes the best fix is to remove the old felted window channel and fit a replacement.
