Wild S30s, which would you have?

Having been reading about the Janspeed bodied Z, then going through Ben & Dees gallery, I started thinking...

I have a '73 240, the one I wanted to do up, decided I'd end up buying a <'73 car anyway so why waste the money going mad on doing it up.
Well one obvious plan (seeing as I don't have to see any money back on the car really) is make it into a track vehicle. The shell is pretty good in the main, it's straight with no sunroof anyway.

So if you were to make a track car, are there any out there similar to the Janspeed car that you'd base a project on? I'm thinking more radical body kit than fast track car, you know how the Janspeed car looks compared to a fast road S30, I'm thinking something that looks like it was made to race :)

I'll hunt for S30 race car porn tomorrow and post pics ;)

One of my favourites.....

Moving on to May 12 1979, Dave Sutherland approaches Deer Leap in his Datsun 240Z.

Taken from a long way down this page http://forums.autosport.com/printthread.php?threadid=99466, looks Janspeed to my untrained eye :)

Yes does look Janspeed in which case it is probably not David Sutherland as IIRC he ran Big Sam in modsports-unless of course he owned both cars at various times?

Did you spot the other two Z pics?
Don't know who is in the Andreason sponsored car, but the other one is a very famous Samuri

I believe it is the same car that John Rich ( Fourways ) was often seen in around this time, and if it is David Sutherland in the car then he would possibly have been sharing it with John Rich or using it for this event at Oulton. Sutherland was a very good customer of Fourways around this time, and they built his green 'Spread Machine' 240Z race car.

Fourways owned ( still own ) a set of moulds for those Janspeed Gr.5-style boxy arches, so they were not seen exclusively on Janspeed-built machines........

Very purdy indeed, and nice lump, but it's not wild enough for a race car :D

A modded RB26 in a car that weighs less than a tonne not 'race car' enough? Are you pissed? The RB powered 240 at Zedfest was capable of Lambo speeds. Mated up to a stripped out 'caged' 240 with wide as you like slicks on stiffer suspension and it's more 'race car' than an awful lot of people could handle. Pah.

260ZG: No I didn't spot the other Zs :)

I never said I didn't like it, or it wouldn't be quick, but if that car went to a race team to be raced it'd look VERY different before they let it out on track :) That car still falls under the "(very) fast road" category :p

I can't see the photos from this, my work connection but remember that you said track-day car and not race-car ! Racing involves keeping within certain regulations that will limit your choice of body, steel or f/g panels, wheel and tyre size and in the case of tyres - make and also engine choices.

Obviously there are many other considerations when racing but know what you want to end up with before-hand.

Here endeth the lesson that I've been learning since I started my idea of a GrpIV replica (based upon a long-held dream) !

Cheaper and quicker to do a track-day car than a race car !!!

Sorry yeah good point :) I have no intentions to compete within a specific class, I suppose the best explanation would be if it gets past the blue book Ben has to follow that'd be a good start :)

Ok for those that don't want to trawl down the hundreds of photos in the link here are the other two Zs

This one is at present unidentified

This one is I think Clive Parker and he was reported to be running FFA at the time, but from this pic it is not clear.(and the reports may of course be incorrect :))

Russ the Blue book will give regs up to a point but they are mainly for safety/noise etc. and do alter with class

I can probably find a copy of the 2008 one on DVD if you are interested.

Various race organising clubs will have their own regs.

Unfortunately the days of being able to use the same car for Autotests, Autocross Road Rallies Stage Rallies Sprints and on track have gone.

One of the major decisions is on engine swaps. If you keep to the L series block it makes life a little simpler.

There are some major changes to the 2010 Blue Book with regard to classes in Sprints and Hillclimbs but we haven't quite worked out what they mean yet

russ body kits still available if you want one give me a ring

I think that the david sutherland car is a different car to mine as the wiper in the roof is not on my shell.
I think john rich built a car for david at some time as yet unknown but thats another thread.

Give me a ring if you want to talk about a kit russ. no obligation

Ben: Cool thanks, I'll give you a ring sometime. Honestly this is a bit of a "this is my next Z plan" which could happen late this year, gotta get my 32 sorted first :)

How much of the car is cut to fit the kit? I'm guessing front wings/bonnet are replacements, but the rear quarters etc... Do you still have the big wing mould?

Rather than waste your time I'm drag myself to one of your hillclimbs weekends and we can chat then :) Is there a good one that possibly the Threadgolds are thinking of attending?

Nice story about a Primadonna Zs, now according to the spiel below this pic...

He started me off with little bubble flares, an air dam and a rear spoiler. Strictly, off the shelf stuff. At first, I liked it but then at the next year’s races I saw these new flares on the Walt Maas Far Performance 240Z. We realized I would be hotter with this setup so the bubbles were popped off and I had a new look.

So I'll check out "Walt Maas Far Performance 240Z" this eve see what that's about.
