This should be interesting

yeah it a shame, then people buy them because it all that's available and they are a bit cheaper, but then they end up costing more in the long run anyway ?

on the good side we end up with more cars over here and people that work on them have more work for their business, and better cars then command more money to

Having spent some time earlier looking at Craigslist in various "dry state" locales, there are quite a few cheap 240Zs at present that would have made a far better alternative import than a rough 260Z. Obviously, its likely as Franky said that the 260Z in question represents a $1000 car. But for US$3-5k there are several 240Zs available - rough, but complete and with limited rust. For around GB£7k up, there are some really pretty nice ones that need limited work to be great. With that level of choice, why import something that is not going to be as desirable and is pretty rusty by dry state standards? Unless the seller doesn't know what they are buying and/or they are hoping to rake in some profit from eager but naive UK buyers...

Actually, saw a couple of cars on Craigslist that had me checking out container shippers! :D

Surely the blue 260/280 that started this Thread is worth more than that and it sold for over £3k. The body looks good to me - the problem is the identity, but that may be ok too.

You can find the cheap ones for yourself with a bit of searching (and there a quite a few across CA, NV, AZ, etc) - I'm keeping my potential targets close to my chest from now on!!! :D

This one however stood out to me as an example of how a pretty nice car can be had for not that much money in the US - GB£8000 to be precise:

Okay, so shipping and handling, and 5% VAT etc. will probably have you into low five figures UK, but still looks a good bet if you were to want a turn-key 240Z.

The blue car may have been worth more than that - we were talking about the rusty white one in the latest eBay ad though. Things that look like that car can be had for (what seems to us) stupid cheap on Craigslist.

Thinking about the blue 280Z though and its worth, here's a 76 280Z project car for US$1200:

And another, "rust free" and running, in San Diego, for US$1600:

A little nicer for US$5k (i.e. £3200 - what that blue car sold for here):

Meanwhile, elsewhere I've spotted an unrestored, running '72 240Z with vast amounts of original paperwork for £4k.... ;)

The thing with the imports that are here is that you have a good look before you buy even if it looks rough .its a lot harder to gauge how good a car is just by looking at photos.

True. But that goes for any car - import or UK. Photos can make most things look good! But I doubt that the seller of the blue 280Z (who obviously had little idea what they were selling) or the seller of the white 260Z looked at those particular cars in huge detail before importing them - I bet the prime motivator was that they were dirt cheap and they thought they could flip them for a decent profit given the rising demand. And they probably have/will.

Richi you know I would have found it anyway  I just took a lucky punt beside you were 3rd in the queue :p

I think in buying a Z or any other classic there's more to it than meets the naked eye depending on what it is

buy any old mgb and buy every thing for it new

With a 240 or a not so common classic
My take on it is make sure everything is there and in reasonable condition, a good solid shell not rust free because that's quite rare for a car that being sold as is from a non dealer private owner, most people that are paying 3 to 6500k for one should know its going to need a paint so that imo paint condition is irrelevant when buying so the blue one probably will need some minor welding but what a minefield trying to get all those missing parts, not sure about the white one but at least you can see what your buying a £1000 fill and blow over would look great in some pictures

conclusion

the rising prices imo dictates the need to view any car before purchase, I guess the americans could have made the white one look lovely for a grand

If that blue one is ok it would make a good shell for conversion of a UK 260Z ?

Rich, if you snooze you loose. Decide on a car an go for it.

:D You are right of course! And yes Terry, I totally screwed that one up by trying to be clever with my super late bidding! I'm glad you've got it anyway as I would've chickened out of doing the mods I wanted to do because it deserves the standard resto you are doing.

well spotted Jeff I see the link isn't working for the 130 pics, but if you look at the white ones link you can see the brown ones pics

looking forward to the sp on the blue one Jeff

Not sure how that Gloucester one didn't come up in my eBay alerts. You beat me to it, let me know how good/bad it is as I might be interested if you don't buy it. I'll hold off enquiring about it as the seller may be a bit firmer on price if he thinks it's generating interest

Looking at whats around at the moment, 4-5K seams the price for a typical rough looking solid Z. Even at that money your going to be looking at 15k total build to end up with a pretty good LHD Z.

Ignoring Tel's purchase most seem to be 260's which I wouldn't have a clue how to value in LHD form?
