Samuri for sale at NEC

This one has been verified by Spike, it comes with the original "Samuri Conversions" invoices.
Why does everyone get so sceptical and hostile about a barn find?
A very good friend of mine was recently asked if he was interested in "one of those plastic cars that lotus Made". Turned out to be a Gold Leaf big valve Elan that had been in a shed untouched for 31 years!! Gold wheels and all!! Currently undergoing restoration and will command £35K plus.
They are out there.
Personally think that if you have doubts then ask the seller/owner for provenance before you start with the childish/catty remarks! Imho

Another one that's not on the register - photo's look like a certain chicken shed to me, but I could be wrong of course...

Anyone know the car?

Edit: the Silverstone page now says restored by Z Farm.

Al......: not on the register and Duncan's, arhem, 'absence' means unable to confirm what he knows.......a shame then that the register is not being kept up to date.

DP has confirmed to me he worked on this car at the Z farm, as is clear from the pictures. He also worked on a Sam 2+2 for the same customer which I saw in his workshop. The 2+2 looked very good but I am no expert and I have no idea if they are original restored Sams or lookalikes.

Al, it's not barn finds that are the issue - we like them, it's the possibility of a barn find ending up as something it never was.

If this is a genuine Samuri fair enough, then it can be sold as one.

Personally if I owned a Samuri I would be more concerned about the situation than a non-Samuri Z owner.

Which begs the question of what constitutes "A Samuri" ?
A question which after many years of debate has never been definitively answered.................

Prepare for an orange and brown coloured can of worms being opened

Little bit of unintentional comedy there, I think...? ;)

Well, as far as these customer 'Samuri Conversions' cars are concerned, it's the impression that the cart often seems to turn up before the horse. How many times have we seen cars pop up out of the ether and then - somewhat miraculously - the 'provenance' to back them up is found (or *remembered*) along with a story. From the outside looking in, it sometimes looks a little bit too convenient...

Sad thing is that the proliferation of these 'customer' cars is in danger of tainting the cars that do deserve their reputation and the kudos that goes with their history. Three cars in particular ('Big Sam', 'FFA' and 'LAL' - a kind of Samuri 'holy trinity') have notable period race history and well-deserved status, and there were also several other cars that were well known and well documented in period. It would be a shame if all that was to be tainted by any impression of also-rans (cars that appear to be getting their status, er, 'upgraded'...) and never-weres (cars that appear to be little more than a recently-applied paint job and a set of carburettors) which we have been presented with lately.

IMHO I don't even think the person who is meant to be the font of knowledge about genuine Sams knows himself now

On the one hand he states this is what a true Sam is and then he allegedly he occasionally gives his confirmation that these others are genuine Sams even though they may not meet his previous definition of what constitutes a Sam as he defines it

Not knocking The Sams at all but more all the contradictory classification of what is and what is not as it seems memories of the facts seem to fade and remembered in a slightly different way or form just to keep some happy

Its all a bit of mythe with bits added as and when for one reason or another
All of course in my own opinion

I know nothing about Samuri's other than the usual orangey brown paint job and bonnet sticker. However I am at the NEC show on the Friday and will try and get some pics of the car and post up before its auctioned off...:D

Hi Rob, I agree (sorry for delay in replying, I've 'been away'!)
What pisses me off is certain people making comment and asking leading questions when I know that they have already been in touch with Spike and have been informed of the cars verification but then fail to share that info on the forum and perpetuate the the speculation (with further comments) surrounding the car. Jesus, I thought this was a forum for fans of the Z and ZX and that we all sang from the same hymn sheet. How naive am I!!!

Al.

Three factors have encouraged comments :

the absence of The Z Farm...hardly leaving a positive wake behind
an awfull, unedited and uninvestigated auction write-up
the absence of the car on the Samuri register

Hopefully, the register angle might soon be covered followed by communication via the auction houses to encourage future write-ups to be factually correct.

I wouldn't hold your breath on either Sean, the ad for this car is almost a full copy and paste of the ad they used for the ex-Tony Darke car they sold at Race Retro back in February:unsure:

And the register is full of lots of incorrect detail...not sure whether Mike Lee is still involved, haven't heard from him in a long while.

Yes, further actionning to undertake re the auction-house descriptions.....perhaps the same person from The Club who could reply to press articles, even stimulating future ones ?

Mike Lee is still very much involved, been in contact with both him and Spike recently.

As for the register, 'watch this space' is all I can say for now - nothing certain yet but plans are afoot.;)
