Future for the 280ZX marque?

All this talk about the 280ZX not being a worthy contender to the Z name is a rather poor show!

With the right colour and interior combo makes a hell of a difference! Hopefully, by this year, my brother's 280ZX should be coming out in all her Zilver glory and she is an auto 2+2.

I think the image of the 280ZX will be getting a boost this year, not only because I will be endorsing one ;) (thanks bro for lending me the keys), but don't forget a rather Sixxy member drives one, as well as our own Z Celebrity Mr.F! His beast will sure have tongues wagging this year, including mine! :)

That's the problem, with some opinions ...You knock one model,& the damage is done to the whole marque. Sod the critics, & some of the in accurate reviews( some of which
were written without seeing the car)
The 280z/x although not held in its esteem, is so much, better, advanced than
simularly priced vehicles of that that time. The extra's, were ahead of what you got in
rival cars. DJZ 60.l:cool:

Hi,
Back in the '80's I switched from a Ford Capri with cart springs to a 280ZX...it was a revelation!
The only thing the 280ZX lacked in it's day was more power!

Little did I realise I would provoke such a response........Some very interesting views but as I said the 280,for whatever reason, seems to fall between the 2 types of interest (i.e.traditional classic or supercar).I for one think it bridges the gap nicely and provides a perfect car, especially for daily use, with the older more traditional shape but with a few more creature comforts.Yes the 2+2 is not as pretty as the 2 seater but at least you can carry (short!) passengers at a push.As for autos they are the preferred option for drag racing so hardly a non-performance feature..I won't get into the defination of "what is a classic" debate but the 280 is a Z and part of the evolution of the marque. One day those that survive it will probably be highly collectable if for nothing else their rarity value.
To those that are enthusiastic about their 280 and are investing in their survival -- I salute you !
P.S. does nobody want my parts.........!!??

Well I just bought my first 1980 280zx and it needs alot of work but the engine runs great. Just interior and exhaust and paint. No rust though but I think the 280zx marque is a great line here in the States.

Well this has caused some debate! I love my 280ZX and I drive it daily to and from work (yes, even throughout the winter). Yesterday, I was flashed by a 240, two 300's (1 Z31 and 1 Z32) and a 350ZX so I guess they think I own a Z. Not really a full house though as I must have missed the 260 (or they slept in). Have a look at my gallery to see a 350ZX and my 280ZX parked together in the car park at work and I can respect both. They are all proper Z's in my view.

As I said DJ, one should compare the 280 to it's rivals of the day - not it's fore or after runners - just a real shame that the turbo wasn't imported !!!
Born to Run - "autos preferred for drag racing" ? Really ?
Koal - there you go - std exhaust over here - unobtainable, interior, bits here and there - exterior paint ? $3500 for more than a blow-over. Yours sounds like a car already stripped and parted over here - for the engine alone !
Different countries have different values - I think I'm gonna hear of a 2+2 being sold over here for €6000 !

By coincidence I received this in the post from the States today
They are a lot more thought of over there than here

Sadly almost nobody wants 280ZX parts unless they are on the following list......Running engines with Dizzi. Alternators
Late manual gearbox(or early manual box as a poor second)
early manual 3.7 R200 diff n output flanges
late manual 3.9 R200 diff n drive shafts
the rest is scrap(IMHO)

Sean-- yes autos are the preferred transmission for drag racing as they can take far more power and of course you lose less time shifting gears.Mr Feeney would I am sure confirm this.
pmac--it does seem that you are right....I have 2 alternators but no engines attached !! the other items listed by you I sold a while ago so proves your point.
JEZ -- I assume the interior bits I mailed you on were not what you need.
Koal -- just pm'd you -- did not realise you were in the states though -- seems ironic as I am at present trying to get parts from the states for my 1962 Rambler stationwagon !!

Anyone got a 2+2 black/grey interior?...Or even red interior parts!
Got a red dashboard in my loft with some/all the instruments....FREE on collection.
All the rest was skipped. Complete good condition late interior.(apart from a bit of red material I sent to someone in France)

If time, space & money were not an issue, I would love to do a 280ZX project. It would be a 2 seater with the later rack & pinion steering fitted (maybe even a T top roof section from the states cut in). A nice mod' would be to install a VG30T engine in it.

Stock (late) bumpers look nice when colour coded, but I think the kit you can buy via Mike from MSA makes the car look better.

It would be the interior that I think would need a bit of work - perhaps a full grey leather / alcantara interior trim including the dashboard would suit and finished off with a nice light silver paint job.

My favourite 280ZX that I have seen in this club belongs to Bigchef - it's got the right look.

I have a complete black 2+2 interior (except for the dash) but it's collect only ! :D !

JEZ : nice 2 seater - there is someone over here doing the same one ( I agree with you re. the spoiler).

Like the slick top Z32s, I prefer the 2 seater as a coupé and I like the interior as it is with the high-back seats. Change the diff for a 3.9, better exhaust, bigger TB - let the engine breath just to 170 bhp...ours already has the rack and pinion non-assisted steering so all we must do is restore it :)........that's all !

Thanks Jez, that's the sort of thing (minus the spoiler).

All it needs is a late bonnet too and I'd try and do something different with the rear lights.

Hi,
Or what about this with it's V8 engine and sidewinders exhausts?
