East African Safari 2007!!! - U heard it here 1st!!

I wholeheartedly agree with you Sean, it's all in the mind.
Mind over matter. (& it matters to me)

Anyway I am proud of Datsuns,& the teams, the drivers, & last but not
least the terrain. Proud because I was born in Kakamega.Kenya. East
Africa. To me everyone that commit's,invest's & spend so much time
preparing for the Safari are heroes & if they drive a DATSUN/NISSAN
then wow! DJZ 60.

P.S I might enter next years Safari, with a modified Garden shed, built with an
engine( nicked from DATSUN DAVE) Suspension & brakes nicked from DAVE J
an exhaust nicked from Qunvats Z & a couple of seats from our classified section
& if I'm busy I'll get Duncan Pearcey to drive it for me!
DJZ 60.

so far.........i

Hi Nigel... Hope you are well. I bumped my head with Seans,at Leic'
services when we were discussing THE EAST AFRICAN SAFARI & both of us have a lump on our heads. Two heads are better than one....one lump or two... sir ? :D DJZ 60. :)

Is this the Winning Zed?

Pictured Below:

Johnathan Savage in the just concluded Kenyan National Rally Championship Round Held in the Kenyan City Nairobi.

Savage brought his Zed home to win the 2Wd catagory of this round. He was 10th in the rally! (The Redbull has obviously done him some good!;) :D)Competing against 4Wd cars like Impreza's and Mitsubishi's. Similar result to the Tanzanian crew of Larry Horn a few months ago.

Savage is using the same car he did in 2005 but with bigger and better suspension from Stewart Wilkins in Australia.

She is going to be stripped down starting next week and rebuilt ready for the event.. Watch out you Escorts!!!!!!!!!!!

240 260z

Dear all Ihave been reading tall you discussions re the 240 vs the 260 saga, I would like you all to know that my car in the 2005 safari event is an early 260Z with the short rear shock turrets, but I actually bought Rob Collinge's 2003 winning engine, so I am actually running the same engine this year, The 260 engine has had some problems in Kenya as it has an inherent vibration problem and unless a lot of time and money has been spent on their re-built, I would rather go for a well balanced 240. I have a really 'hot' 280 engine, but not allowed !! shame??

With regard to scutenirring, the stewards are fairly tough on the Engine specs, but saftey regs must conform to 2007 standards, hence the rollcage mods.

My Car and another one of mine (being leased and driven by Peter Harland & his son) is exactly the same spec as that of Mike Kirkland's who is leasing it to John Lloyd, and for some more info Rob Collinge's ex car has been bought and entered by Stephano Rocco. He has a really hot 260 engine built in Australia and he was running it as a route opening car in last weeks local event, and it looks great and sounds better.

All the above 4 cars are baisically built the same and were all prepared by Stewart Wilkins Rallying outside Sydney,All the cars are running on 55mm Murray Coutts suspension, Stewart has also just prepared 3 x Datsun 180B's for the same event.

Bwana Savage! Karibu Sana!! ;) ;)

Nice to see you finally using the forum!!

Keep us posted on the news in Kenya!

Good Luck!

Hi Jonathan and welcome to the site

thanks for the information - hope you have a chance to keep us up to date with the rebuild - best of luck for this years rally

Start order out for 2007!!!

PRESS RELEASE

2007 KQ SAFARI CLASSIC - START ORDER ANNOUNCED TODAY

The 1979 World Rally Champion Bjorn Waldegard co-driven by his son Mathias Waldegard in a Ford Escort Mark 1 has taken pole position followed by Belgian Gerard Marcy who teams up with Alain Lopez in a Porsche 911. Waldegard is a stalwart of the old-type Safari Rally that he won in 1984 with Hans Thorzelius Toyota Celica TCT and in 1990 with Fred Gallagher in a Toyota Celica GT4. He will lead a total of 59 drivers.
Waldegard’s Swede compatriot and Historic Motorsports teammate Stig Blomqvist will take-off third navigated by Venezuelan Ana Goni. Blomqvist won the Swedish Rally several times and was the 1984 World Rally Champion.
Five-time Kenya champion and 1994 WRC Safari Rally winner Ian Duncan is the top seeded Kenyan in the KQ Safari Classic set to zoom in Mombasa on November 25.
Duncan will take-off in fifth position teaming up with Amaar Slatch in a Ford Mustang, according to draws announced by Kenya Airways Head of Marketing and Corporate Communication, Michael Okwiri at a Nairobi Hotel.

Event Director, Surinder Thatthi, said the starting order was prepared in consideration of drivers’ track record. “We decided to put faster drivers at the top by gauging their past experience and also to ensure a smooth sailing in regards to safety issues. We want to avoid a scenario whereby by slower drivers will be caught up in the dust of the hard-charging competitors. We have considered previous results to ascertain the ability of competitors. But the starting order in preceding days of the competition will change and would be decided on results of the previous day,” Surinder said.
Sports Commissioner Gordon Oluoch said the event evokes lots of nostalgic memories of the days the rally traversed through all the three East Africa Countries. He said the rally will be a major boost to the enhancement of the East African spirit. “We as the government are happy to see motor sports in Kenya coming off age and we will work very closely to ensure its success,” Oluoch said.
The 2007 Kenya Airways Classic Safari will be a battle ground between home grown seasoned drivers and European professionals between November 25 to December 3 in Kenya and Tanzania. This high number has been inspired by the performance of Rob Collinge, winner of the last two editions of the Classic, which has already turned around the clock of time since the last truly East African Safari in 1973.
Like in the past, foreigners have enlisted the services of local navigators, renowned for their knowledge of conditions on the ground.
The Safari marks the return of Coast-based Rob Hellier, one of the most consistent drivers of the 90s who will be partner by South African Wayne Kiestwetter in a Datsun 180B, car number 53.

Not at all.

Out of the "pan" and straight into the "fire" !! I still have a long long way to go when I get to Kenya. Alot of things to do to make sure it stands the Roads in Kenya!

I need to write a book on this!!

Just a little more information on my cars in he classic event, firstly I am now drawn No 21 which is a bit daunting, as there are some quick cars behind me so I must pay attention tomy rear view mirror.

With regard to my other car, this car I bought from Phil Mason in Australia, and was initially prepared by Stewart Wilkins as a gravel spec car, but he has now had it back and re-prepared it to Safari Spec so that it is exactly the same as mine, which will make it much easier for spares and service.

Pete harland a very old friend of mine (used to work with me in Kenya and service myself and my cousin rallying an Ex Works Lancia 037) from South-end-on Sea is renting it from me for the event andhe is being co-drivenby his 18yo son marcus. They have never done this type of thing before, and has been taking lessons from Ian Freestone here in UK. He will come out and test drive the new Z (just now arrived in my garage) in the next Local KNRC Guru Nanak event event in Nairobi Oct 2007.(I will be forced to drive my sons gruop A 1983 VW Golf). I will let you all know the outcome. All for now

Jonathan

These weeks are just total "dead time"
