Z Club Drag Challenge. April 9th Round 1.

Round one has now been and gone along with concerns over the weather.
All in all it went remarkably well, the weather held out until around late lunch and a quick shower came and went with this out of the way it held together until around 15:30 when the heavens opened. With that said what a day we had, 9am saw 6 Zeds in the first 15 cars of the fire up lane and all in all about 12 or so cars turned up, 5 of these were 240's:eek: .

Star of the day has to be old man McDonald who despite age and looks being against him, ran an incredible 14.6 in his NA slick top (despite me paying Chunk to beat him:rolleyes: )

Nice to see John Hunter there who travelled from Kent just to support the club, nice one John

Commiserations go to Dave Porter who travelled all the way from Stockport in his immaculate Zed to be there, only to have a drive shaft failure on the start line.

All in all though, a fabulous day.

As Steve said, a great day with plenty of Zeds to watch. Sadly mine is still not ready but one of the good things about seeing others enjoy their Zeds is the inspiration it gives me to carry on and get it finished(or at least back on the road).

John

No star of the day MUST go to Steve Kiddell who lent me his AA card so i could get home he waited with me untill the recovery truck arrived and missed out on running his car up the strip !! nice one mate also thanks to the guys who lent a hand to move to car to the main gate just go to show the friendship in the club THANKS

Yes indeed. It was sad to see Dave sidelined first thing in the morning.
however, with the best 6 scores from 8 it hasnt affected his overall chances in the Challenge..
One of the benefits of the new rules.
There were three of us in 300ZX NAs today and all of us had good runs.
Personal bests from SteveJ and me. Chunk too had some good consistent times in his newly acquired NA Targa top.
As Skiddell has already mentioned, fastest time of the group went to me with a 14.63 sec run. This beats last years best time of 14.87sec.
60ft time improved to2.03sec.
all down to my newly acquired Mickey Thompsom ET Street Radials!!!
Not a cheap option at £400 a pair, but well worth it IMO.
I drove the car to the track on them and also home in sleet n pouring rain. They are also capable of passing an MOT Test, so they qualify as eligible for the Drag Challenge(but only just!!!);)
Today was all a big learning curve with them. Im confident there is more to come from them.
Next Round is at York on April 30th.
BRING IT ON!!

No doubt Mr F or Zedhead260 will be along with a points tally.:conf2:

Also forgot to say a BIG thank you to the 300 guys also offered the use of a RAC card to get home

Yep we're good like that, now maybe you could offer us a lend of one of your cards...any one will do master card, barclay card, american express... any thing will do!

Seriously glad you got back ok and hope all goes well with the repair, see you at the next one.

Steve

Good turn out today, I was impressed with the variation of the cars!!

Glad Dave got home OK, I was looking forward to seeing the "baby ***" ;) coloured 240 fly up the strip.

Great to see Pmac get a new PB and also SteveJ, As Pete mentioned i took my new NA, best of the day for me was 15.773@88.07mph, Needless to say im very chuffed with that as its still pretty stock, although i did tell the missus i wouldnt spend on it, i may just have to spend a quid or two, just to get that little bit more grunt! :D

HUGE WD to Skiddell, great time that buddy, not too far of my Z32TT  I'm getting worried now :)

Was very nice to meet the other Zedders that ive not met before, Roll on Round 2 :D

All the best

Rich

Well I can honestly say that I had a great day out, as can be seen from me being at the top of the table at the moment. Eaven the drive home was interesting as i made full use of my newely fixed heater to blow away the snow and sleet.

It also give me the opertunity to find out how much grip I have in the wet, unfortunately not a lot.....:D

Anyway great fun.

Mike B

Michael Brown (MaximG) far lane in the silver 240Z, lining up against Jon Mason in the blue 240Z.

Mick's 15.49 is very good for what is basically a stock car. The only real mod is a Janspeed header with stainless steel exhaust and 280ZX electronic ignition.

Just goes to show you don't have to have the fastest car to walk away with all the points, keep up the good work for round 2.

Top Tables Update

Ok, I have updated the Hall of Fame and the Top 10's in class (new entries highlighted in blue)

Firstly, huge congratulations to Skiddell for raising the bar in class 1, keeping well above the opposition and climbing to 15th position in The Hall of Fame deep into Z32TT territory.

Secondly to Mick Boakes (Dr Shemp) for his new entry - 7th overall postion in class 3.

And thirdly to all the Z32 NA runners, achieving 1 new entry and 2 personal bests. Pmac now sits in 46th place Hall of Fame.

....oh, one more thing.....................

There was a 350Z on the day but we never got a chance to say hi.

For reference we saw this car run a 15.816@91.46mph with a 0.511 reaction.
Do join us :)

Have had lots calls texts and email from Zclub members offering parts and help to repair the car ready for York at the end of the month again a BIG THANK YOU, hopefully the gearbox is OK and its just the OSR drive shaft thats broken have spoken to the fabracation shop today and we now now what has happened so a mark 2 version is now under way when the Sabaru shaft was altered we did not heat treat it so when we welded the Z part to it weakened the shaft and broke !

Thanks to the organisers for a very fun day, it was nice meeting/seeing all of you. As Jon said, it has given me the inspiration to get back in the garage and finish my Z! I felt very zedless on Sunday...

Dave, glad you got home ok and also that the box may have survived. One question though, why could the car still roll when in gear?

1. Steve Kiddell 13.484/102.02 - 4 points, 2 attendance, best reaction 0.469 (pos 6). Total points scored 11.

That is an incredible time Steve, do tell what made such a difference, just new tyres?? what was your 60ft for that..

well done mate!

Because its a LSD and only 1 driveshaft was attached thats what warbys telling me

Cheers Phil, the tyres have made a HUGE difference, its now far more difficult to spin up off the line, in fact the amount of grip, even in the wet is outrageous, the disadvantage is that I now have to learn to launch it all over again:mad:. 60ft was a mediocre 2.1 seconds:eek: so there's clearly room for improvement, I would bet that in the hands of a more competent driver there might be another 1/10 or so to be had.
Over the Winter I had suffered a noticeable power loss, accompanied by a vibration at about 6500 which proved difficult to track down (turned out to be non injection issue) once diagnosed it resulted in a strip and rebuild of the top end which was completed late Saturday evening. Now the power delivery and breathing at 6500 - 7500 is significantly improved.
On that run a fairly tricked up scooby-world impreza beat me off the lights (1.92 60ft) but at the end of 1320 feet was well and truly being reeled in (he eventually did a 13.2) -- which made me smile -- guess these throttle body thingies do work after all:rolleyes:.
A 33 year old, 6 cylinder, NA classic car doing a sub 13.5 -- you just have to grin don't you.

Next rounds at York (30th April) which some people claim runs quicker so who knows what on earth can be done.
