Z Club Drag Challenge 2010

Huge difficulty in selecting suitable dates for simple RWYB days at Santa Pod this year - virtually every weekend is packed with other Club and event stuff. However, herewith the PROVISIONAL dates list of six rounds, pre-season gathering and rain-off contingency.
Same rules apply as last season - call, e-mail or PM for a copy.

7th March - pre-season gathering for the faithful few - probably too early for many...
27th March (Saturday) - Round 1
22nd May (Saturday) - Round 2
17th July (Saturday) - Round 3 - option to stay over for Retro Show on the Sunday. If enough interest, we could extend to include times posted on the Sunday where track time will be more limited.
22nd August (Sunday) - Round 4 (the Saturday is Rotorstock 7 with RWYB facility. Again, the meeting could be extended to include times run at Rotorstock if anyone wants to make a weekend of it)
4th September (Saturday) - Round 5
24th October (Sunday) - Round 6
31st October (Sunday) - Rain-off contingency round

In addition:
4th July (with RWYB facility both Saturday 3rd and the Sunday) - JapShow 1. This could be a round of the Drag Challenge again, but would need prior commitment and organisation to ensure we had a pit space.
3rd October - JapShow 2 The Finals - as above.

Saturday dates in the Drag Challenge have come about because Santa Pod have swapped their Test and Tune days for the big racers to the Sundays. These days are available for RWYB, but at increased costs and sign-on limited to 100 entries, many of which will have been booked in advance.

Costs this year:
RWYB: Gate £10 per person; sign-on for unlimited runs £25
Test & Tune days: Gate £12; track time £60 (£50 if booked in advance)
Saturday Special: Gate £10; sign-on 9am - 9pm £30, 9am - 4pm £25, 4pm - 9pm £10.
JapShows: Gate £15 Sunday only, £25 weekend; track Saturday £25 unlimited, Sunday £20 per four runs.
Rotorstock and Retro: Gate £15 Sunday only, £25 weekend; track £25 unlimited per day.

Any comments / suggestions quickly please and I can make these final...

Yes, thanks for the dates Mike. Have not been to Santa Pod for years - planning come along and have a chat with some of the members/competitors this year.

Looking forward to this season, if i can get the dreaded metro out the garage i could get on with the V8! Not to worry, should be on the road for march :D Yippee!

Car should be ready this year........or did I say that last year.......and the year before.....ect,ect,ect....

Just noticed this extract from the RWYB site for Santa Pod:

Now Take A Friend On The Quarter Mile!
Santa Pod has just turned the track day market on its head, by being the first venue in the UK to allow guests to drive under fully timed race conditions – with a passenger!
In a dynamic change to their rules and regulations, the ‘Pod has made it possible for any enthusiast enjoying a day’s full-tilt driving (at £35 all in) to take a passenger alongside, under race conditions, for only a £10 sign-on fee!
Passengers will need to bring their full UK driving licence and sign on in the usual manner, but having done so - and once presented with their wristband, they are free to ride shotgun with anybody on the start line that would like them onboard. With events running every month and at every major Santa Pod show there are over 50 separate opportunities in 2010 for a bit of twos-up, heads-up racing! Any road legal car is eligible, but understandably, real race car drivers, bikers and anyone running faster than 130mph will have to travel solo!
Upon announcing the move, Santa Pod MD, David Lloyd Jones was quick to point out the many benefits. "We’re proud to have added this new dimension to our RWYB days,’ he said. ‘By allowing passengers, it not only makes it a far more enjoyable day for groups of friends attending, but also opens the door for any tuners or commercial organisations to come along and showcase their wares to prospective customers. This fundamental change in our running regulations also means we can offer ‘experience’ rides to allow newcomers to the sport to discover the thrill of the quarter mile, for the price of a round of drinks."

Although each run is limited to one passenger per car, there is no limit to the amount of guests accompanying each car, so if you’re looking to sell, to impress, to entertain – or even for a first date with a difference, why not try the new RWYB for two?

What can I say? If you want to compromise your performance with 150 - 200lbs of dead weight in the passenger seat, then be my guest! Instant 2 - 3 tenths reduction in E.T.

Which means billy barrowboy and his baseball capped mates hanging out the windows and 7 blonde girls crammed in the boot will be taking on each other, it'll be like a Friday night down at Tesco  :driving::driving:

Also bad for me because i'm going to have every man and his dog want a ride in my car up the strip at every show i go to

Sorry but metro's aren't my thing:)

You were talking about the metro?

Don't knock it Mike. I may even let you ride shotgun in the smart...........It may suffer more than a few tenths though!

Thanks for the rules Mike hoping to get my car de-sorned by April so I my miss the first round but I will do as many as possible unlike some would be's so it seems!!!

I'm hoping i'll be on the road for round one, i'll try and pop down for the warm up but depends how much time i need to get the V8 finished

Well definately won't be on the road for round one but should give me the whole of april to get on the case and that sucker rolling, hope you all have fun this weekend guys and see you in May :D

just finished "stage one" of my build, put down on a Rototest hub dyno 385hp and 366lb/ft on 0.5BAR boost and softest actuator springs. Estimate 430hp and similar tq when "stage 2" (Haltech boost solenoid and stiffer actuator springs) is complete.

I think I might do a few runs with this setup to see what numbers I'm going to get then do the rest of the work! :D

See you lot soon enough :D might even be tomorrow on my way up back to Manchester!

Round 1 Results

After a wet and windy start to the day, the track was dried and cleaned to allow a complete afternoon of runs. Conditions cold, light wind. Track not too good for street tyres and lots of horsepower...

Class 3:
Frank Marino (welcome back!) 14.3751 @ 100.54 mph. Best reaction time 0.0863 - wow!

Class 5:
Paul Hopkinson (newly de-catted) 13.6188 @ 105.69 mph. Best reaction time 0.3243

Class 6:
Valerio Minelli (lots of horsepower from the new twin turbo, but struggling for grip) 14.2345 @ 104.54 mph. Best reaction time of 0.6121

Class 7:
Darren Stiles (RB240Z) also struggling for grip - 13.0105 @ 114.49 mph. Best reaction time 0.5723.

Spectators:
Me (Stagea RS4, who didn't replace his 350Z supercharger belt and hasn't got his 200ZR running right)
Matt Bannister (Smart passenger, talking about having a 240Z at some time in the past)
John Palmer (Smart driver who now truly believes he owns a 240Z...)

was good to see you all guys!

only 3 runs wasnt enough for me to get to "grips" with the extra power/tq... last run was my best where i basically didnt give any revs at all, after the previous 2 where i was wheelspinning the whole planet underneath the car LOL

My last 60ft was like 2.4 so I think plenty of improvement there, also tyre pressure was the std 35psi, had full spare tyre setup, 2 suitcases etc :D (excuses I know, but true :D ).

I might need to either get a better driver or have some sort of traction control system, whichever is the cheapest ahaha (might just be the traction control LOL )

cheers mike, good to see everyone again after missing last year & hopefully more of you in may as a few projects finished by then we hope
