Z Bonnet Repair?

Not sure of the name of this part ?
But for some reason the o/s upper outer edge "lip" of my 260z bonnet has rusted bad
The rest of the bonnet seems very good, so when shut it looks fine.
To me that lip doesn't do anything?
So is there any reason why I shouldn't just cut/grind the outer lip off and have the seam welded closed?
Would cut the other side to suit

Found a pic

you could repair it but you would have to tack a bit at a time as the heat from a welder could warp the top part of the bonnet

That is an option yes. That pic is a few months old so is worse now :(
I get a feeling once the rot is cut back it will run into the bonnet face?

Odd how its rusted that way

i always thought its more common for the front edge to rot rather than the sides

As did I, but the front edge seems solid

I've prodded at it a few times but can't find fault

My first thought is that you should replace the bonnet. Is it worth the time and effort on a bolt-on part? I would have thought bonnets were easy to come by but I might be completely wrong.

I have one in my garage but I daren't get rid of it because I have a very thin fibreglass one on my car which might get damaged.

i think most of us have spare parts /pannels just in case indoors :lol:but i think if your thinking of cutting the lip off and welding you may as well repair it with a new lip section as well, then it will regain its strength do it right do it once
