Windscreen options

Interested to know if there are any other options for replacement windshields other than getting one from a breaker?
I have a doner car but the screen has a tiny crack in it after only removing a small piece of the rubber/glue stuff at the weekend. No doubt it'll crack pretty easily when I get further along with it.

Do places like Autoglass have these available? Does anybody have a non-cracked one? etc

I have supplied 280ZX trim and fixing parts to Autoglass on a couple of occasions during the last year - they must have a supply of screens available.
Personally I would try a specialist smaller firm first - they may be able to buy the same thing and they WILL be cheaper than Autoglass!
Note that the plastic trim fixing strips are still available, but we have pretty much exhausted any of the stainless steel surrounding trim parts...

Thanks for the info, I wonder if they would do a screen under insurance?

With regard to the plastic fixings - are they external? I 'm just trying to picture the parts you are referring to.

Also, as a side note, how the hell are you supposed to remove the metal surrounds that run down the edges of the screen on the outside?! I saw that they have tabs tucked inside but I couldn't for the life of my figure out for to remove them!

The side trims have tabs with small set screws hidden under the rubber weatherstrip on the A-post. Once unscrewed they pull off to each side. The top and bottom trims are (or should be) mounted on self-adhesive plastic strips (plus clips on the '82/'83 cars). These strips are replaced with the screen and stick onto the bodywork returns before the screen is laid onto its mastic seal.

If you remove the rubber that runs down the pillar, there are screws underneath that hold the side chrome trims on. The ones that run across the car (top and bottom) are held on with plastic clips stuck into the windscreen surround. These are the ones you will need to replace if you remove the screen.

BenGT, is your car on the road and insured ;)

Why yes it is!

Thing is though, I need to remove the windscreen and repair the roof edge as it leaks like a sieve and appears to be fully rusted through all along the top edge.....

Hypothetically speaking, i wonder if I could remove the glass myself carefully, repair the roof/rust, replace the windscreen badly, then call out autoglass on the insurance to fit a new one properly?! ;)

Has any one any tips on how to get a windscreen out in one piece as I want to remove the one from my breaker and keep it in case I ever need it?

If you have the dash removed its easier but basically:

Cut as much surrounding bonding material away as you can with a stanley knife. Then get a couple of steel wound guitar strings (thick ones top E is best) Poke the string through between the screen and surround - thats why you need to cut as much as you can away first. It takes a bit if doing but it will go through. Wrap the string around some wooden dowel at both ends so the string is about half length. use the string like a fret saw to cut through the mastic thats left. The dowels are there to use as handles as the string WILL cut through your fingers. The string will wear out about half way around if the screen is stuck in well with no rust.

This works for me, and I've done a few with other cars. Just be carful and you shouldn't bust the screen, but there is no guarantee as the screen maybe under stress or if its chipped.

Hope this helps,

All the best
