Isn't it quite common these days to expect to drain via the dipstick hole?

Jon, I've heard of this before but not convinced by it.

Doesn't it leave lots of gunk behind at the bottom of the sump?

I wonder if there is a market for retrofit sump plugs in the future!! ;)

Many auto transmissions don't have a drain plug - retro-fit plugs have been available for those for 40+ years...

Not a great fan of iDrive but kinda makes sense to not have to pop the bonnet, find an old tissue in your pocket and get your hands oily to check levels. I guess it's progress, until the sensor packs up ;)

Yeah but I like opening the bonnet and stroking the engine :D
Quicker than trying to find it on the iDrive.

We have an auto sucker that pulls oil up the dipstick tube it works just as well as sump plug if you get the oil warm it's easier and less mess you can change oil and filter without jacking up a car or removing under trays , most modern mercs don't have sump plugs now. Not a lover of non dip stick my 06 bmw just has a level monitor built into dash non I drive.
