Welsh Rally

The third round of this year's British Historic Rally Championship is the Welsh Rally on 29th-30th April. www.welshinternationalrally.com
This is a 2 day tarmac rally on the daunting Epynt Military Ranges just north of Brecon, starting at 1.00pm on Saturday.
With Dominic Frattaroli's car still not ready, it is our turn to be the lonely 240Z.
Our class, C4, is the biggest and toughest in the event with 8 Porsche 911's and the one Z. The Porsche drivers include Jimmy McRae (father of Colin and 5 x British Rally Champion), Steve Smith (reigning Historic Rally Champion) and Nick Whale (sports car racer and twice Historic Rally Champion) to mention just a few!!
Wish us luck! We are going to need it! (and about 60 more bhp and better brakes!)

Good luck then Hugh and Debby, keep it on the black stuff!

Eppynt is a bit scary with its brows and ditches at the side of the road.

I went down there one day to make some notes with my mate Pete Forrester. We heard a noise over the car (Mk 1 Escort Mexico) and it turned out to be an Army helicopter flying backwards with the crew looking down through our windscreen to see what we were doing! We made notes for the 'New Road' which must be 30yrs old now. Another name that comes to mind is the 'Drover's Arms' for some reason.

The Welsh used to be a major event on the rally calendar with some great forest stages. Tony Fall won it in a 240 (Biostrath sponsored) didn't he?

I also manned a stage finish there at night on a single venue event and remember Barry Hughes coming up and checking how we were timing the finish (no red boards or beam across the road). I was going on when headlights appeared over the final brow (no wonder he asked!). Barry was Roy Fidler's navigator (240 driver) at one time, I seem to remember that he died in an unfortunate drowning accident. Anyway enough of the old days, hope you have a good run, Rob.

Finished 5th in class and 11th Post Historic. Huge attrition rate amongst the 911's!

Scary but fun all weekend!

Well done Hugh and Debby!

The important word in your post was 'finished', it's so easy to under-estimate the effort, skill, restraint, experience, good car preparation etc needed to do that on a competitive event.

Glad you enjoyed it and represented the Z Club.
