Somerset Stages Rally

The Violet was not planned as a replica but the owner decided to go with the works colour scheme when he heard of Mehta's death.

I think he has the proper grill but said there was a problem getting the correct headlights?

I think the rear axle may be a Toyota one which may cause some problems with eligibility next year - I hope not.

Nice guy - lots of experience from 70's and 80's, has rallied a 240Z before, and builds his own cars, so may be a garage proprietor? I had planned to get his contact details at the end of the rally but did not see him then. (We were completely knackered!) He has our card so I hope he will be in touch.

Hugh

Not many "real deal" cars about and people who have them are rarely prepared to use them. So, in some ways, replicas are better! (oops, did I say that?)

He is not looking hard enough for the lights:D . Shame that you dont have a contact, would have been nice to see the rear end:eek: of the violet. Its impossible to find a decent LSD for the stock axle, hence the move to Toyota ( I want to do this on my violet, so would have been nice to get a few pointers:devil: )

Might have to do a google searcg and get his contact no

Apparently they do "FLY" .... :D :D

Russ, you really need to visit a stage rally!
All the cars presented for scrutineering before the rally are VERY smart! Of course, this is because many of them are professionally fettled between events, but the scrutineers would take a very dim view (and a very close look at) of any which were not well presented.
Although I do most of the work on our car myself and there are a few cracks in the paintwork where the bodywork has flexed, it is still pretty much straight and shiny. The sills and the bottom of the doors need painting regularly as they get blasted!
Of course the underneath is another matter entirely! The floorpan looks like the surface of the moon but is still solid! You learn to ignor the sound of the rocks and stones hitting the underside!
The idea is not to bash the car about, although it does take a bit of a beating and occasionally has to come in to land from a foot or so in the air. I aim to drive within my limitations and not hit anything too solid!
The car was rolled by the previous owner in 1992 on the Coronation Rally and then rebuilt. It was next used by us in 2001 and we are still finding the odd scar or crack in the paint appearing from, for example, where the new roof was fitted.
It is a competition car, not an ornament! The important thing is that it works and is out there being used. (and giving us a lot of enjoyment!)

Hugh,

Did you already have a chance to inspect Dominic’s car? His guru LE covered the floor pan totally with a carbon shell!!!

The carbon underfloor protection is definitely out of my price range!
I am also told that it is illegal in Historic Rallying in the UK, although it would be nice to be able to protect our cars.
I do not think it was done in period! Was carbon fibre around in the '70s?

I can’t imagine also it was period. Well we have to see at the first scuteneering then....
Perhaps it is an experiment for his EAS cars?
