Smoking From Oil Breather Filter

Ihave noticed that since i have put the modified air filter on & breather filter i get smoke out of the breather filter & a trickle of oil leaks out eventually anyone know of possible cause or is it just the way i have routed pipe which is down to the front of the car under the airfilter just behind the front bumper

A standard 280ZX runs a closed PCV system - using a rocker breather effectively opens the system to atmosphere and changes the relationship of pressure between crankcase and rocker cover. Thus you will tend to lose oil as vapour which will condense in the breather filter. When Janspeed re-routed a PCV pipe to the air filter on the turbo cars it often resulted in a contaminated air filter box for similar reasons.

Or you could just have worn piston rings as status suggests.......

do a compression test (wet & dry) remember to do the dry test first then you will know for sure if your rings are ok personaly i dont like mods (unless they are my own) stick to standard stuff you wont pick up trouble there is other tests that can be done cyl leak test for instanse but that is specialist eqp i dout if you have that stuff a comp tester is all you need at this stage

Will this cause a problem when I change from the standard air box to the adapted cold air intake

both breather have been open on both my l28 engines...no smoke or oil comes out. Probably just a worn engine.

Shouldn't do........ although if the engines creamed it will......mind you the speed you drive grandad i doubt its run in yet...:p

1, have you over filled the engine with oil?

2, is the oil splash plate missing from the cam cover?

3, is the oil splash plate/gauze missing from the block breather?

PCV system remains unchanged, so no difference to what you have now. Pete was talking about putting a breather filter onto the rocker cover pipe thus changing an active PCV system into a passive one.

Ahhhhh so its a passive smoker then?
