Self import from Japan?

Has anyone actually imported a Z from Japan themselves? What does it involve? Are there Japanese sites (English speaking) that have Z's for sale?
I'm looking for a good Series III at a reasonable price and want to weigh up all the options. Any other suggestions?

Hi Matt -

Series I, 07/89-08/92 - Series II, 08/92-09/93 - Series III, 09/93-10/94 - Series IV, 10/94-01/97 - Series V, 01/97-10/98 - Series VI, 10/98-09/00.

Please don't think I'm the clever one, I poached all this info from the '300zx.org.uk' site. I've only found out about the site a few days ago and it's packed full of really useful info about the Z32........why not have a look.

Albrecht would be the man, try a PM to him. Fluent in Japanese and a font of knowledge at that. He may know of sales rooms and/or agents that deal in Z's.

As you already use 300zx.co.uk have a look at a trader called Import-ance he seems to bring some nice cars in and may be able to source what you want.

Thanks, Grolls and Derek - I have pm'd both albrecht and import_ance and will wait and see what they reply.

Dave,
Rather than answer your PM with another PM, I thought I might just as well answer you here.

Importing a car of Z32 age from Japan is relatively simple as long as you have a trustworthy and reliable contact in Japan. The UK side of the import ,and all the shipping / customs / registration logistics are easy, but sourcing a good car at the price necessary to please you once everything else is added on top is the difficult bit. I'm sure I won't be too far wide of the mark when I guess that you want to get a good car for relatively little money..........

This means that the car will probably have to come via the Japanese trade auctions ( buying from a reputable marque specialist in Japan will make it too expensive for you ) and there are a few companies who have this access from the UK. I won't bother recommending any, as the only ones I would recommend would probably be too expensive for what you require.

To be brutally honest ( I hope you don't mind ) the Z32 is approaching the bottom of the value curve in Japan, and that means that ownership tends to pass into younger and less fastidious hands with less money to spend on the important aspects of the car. In short, there will be a lot of part-ex dross going through the auctions that needs TLC and - in some cases - serious money spent on them in the near future. Marque specialists will tend to weed out the better one-owner FNSH stuff, so basically you need to nick one of those cars off them when they go through the auctions. Your Japanese contact will need patience and a good eye, and will need to spend time on it. Once again, that costs money.

Please bear in mind that I'm not an importer or a car salesman - so I'm sure you will get a much more positive response from somebody who thinks they can make a few quid out of you ( caveat emptor ). I've had cross words before now on this forum with an "importer" who wanted to tell people he could get a rust-free 240Z from Japan for five grand landed in the UK. The auction sheets of the two cars he decided to use as examples mentioned specifically ( in Japanese of course ) that both cars had extensive rust problems. He denied this. As far as I'm aware, he hasn't imported one yet. This is the kind of person you need to look out for.

My only real advice to you would be to urge you to try and get a handle on the prices of top-notch Z32s in Japan ( both at auction, and with marque specialists ) and you can do a lot of that on the 'net. You will need to get a feel for the kind of cars that are available, and the prices that they are changing hands for. Spend some time on this, as it will help you to judge what the importer is telling you. Everything else ( agents fee, de-registration, export documentation, shipping etc etc ) is pretty much fixed no matter what you are buying, so the main variable will be the cost of the car. Even though there is a very favourable exchange rate at the moment, please DON'T be tempted to go for the cheaper cars. Spend as much as you think you can afford.

And in the end, I think you will be asked to lay your money down before seeing the car in the metal, and to place your faith in somebody else's judgement and abilities.

I wish you good luck.

a friend of mine works at an sva preperation center.he tells me it is not possible to import the last model z32.the ministry have not approved these models for this country.the cost to do this is astronomical and an importer would need to pay this fee to get the car in.so it would not be cost effective unless the demand was huge.what a shame!!!

Many thanks, albrecht, for the valuable advice. How do I sound out the Japanese market on the web? Are there any English speaking sites you can recommend. Ebay, for one, doesn't appear to have a Japanese site.

Hi jimmer - I am not looking for the latest model Z32 (Series VI) but only the Series III which was manufactured between 09/93 and 10/94, so should I have a problem?

You shouldn't have a problem with a car of that age. Anything under 10 years old would require an SVA test + a model report (nightmare).
Once your 93/94 car is here you will only need to MOT it & register it with the DVLA... not that hard.

I would just say that you should try to get a model that was not released over here, to make it worth while.

I suggest you trawl around a bit on the most popular Japanese web auction site - Yahoo Japan:

http://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/

If you want to search specifically for used Z32s, then just type 'Z32' into the blank box on the left and choose the 11th line on the drop-down menu from the box on the right ( which will narrow down the search to the cars and parts categories ). This will bring you to this page:

http://search1.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/search/auc?p=Z32&auccat=26318

I just tried it and the search threw up 142 pages of items with 50 items on each page. There are quite a few used cars scattered through the auctions, and you will find some of them are being sold by dealers - so it can be a useful research tool.

Alternatively, you can try searching for used Z32s using the Car Sensor website:

www.carsensor.net

A Japan-wide search for Z32s threw up 248 cars at 11am today.

I can't recommend any sites in English. Why would Japanese used car sites need to have their listings in English? The best ones certainly don't need to.

Thanks to all of you, especially Albrecht, for your responses to my question. I apologise to you all as I have now made all your helpfulness superfluous having been woed into buying a fresh new Jap import from a dealer in Birmingham. (See my signature below).

I'm a little embarassed for doing this after asking for and getting your valued advice but, as fellow Z lovers, I am sure you will understand my impetuousness and forgive me.
