Dave,
Rather than answer your PM with another PM, I thought I might just as well answer you here.
Importing a car of Z32 age from Japan is relatively simple as long as you have a trustworthy and reliable contact in Japan. The UK side of the import ,and all the shipping / customs / registration logistics are easy, but sourcing a good car at the price necessary to please you once everything else is added on top is the difficult bit. I'm sure I won't be too far wide of the mark when I guess that you want to get a good car for relatively little money..........
This means that the car will probably have to come via the Japanese trade auctions ( buying from a reputable marque specialist in Japan will make it too expensive for you ) and there are a few companies who have this access from the UK. I won't bother recommending any, as the only ones I would recommend would probably be too expensive for what you require.
To be brutally honest ( I hope you don't mind ) the Z32 is approaching the bottom of the value curve in Japan, and that means that ownership tends to pass into younger and less fastidious hands with less money to spend on the important aspects of the car. In short, there will be a lot of part-ex dross going through the auctions that needs TLC and - in some cases - serious money spent on them in the near future. Marque specialists will tend to weed out the better one-owner FNSH stuff, so basically you need to nick one of those cars off them when they go through the auctions. Your Japanese contact will need patience and a good eye, and will need to spend time on it. Once again, that costs money.
Please bear in mind that I'm not an importer or a car salesman - so I'm sure you will get a much more positive response from somebody who thinks they can make a few quid out of you ( caveat emptor ). I've had cross words before now on this forum with an "importer" who wanted to tell people he could get a rust-free 240Z from Japan for five grand landed in the UK. The auction sheets of the two cars he decided to use as examples mentioned specifically ( in Japanese of course ) that both cars had extensive rust problems. He denied this. As far as I'm aware, he hasn't imported one yet. This is the kind of person you need to look out for.
My only real advice to you would be to urge you to try and get a handle on the prices of top-notch Z32s in Japan ( both at auction, and with marque specialists ) and you can do a lot of that on the 'net. You will need to get a feel for the kind of cars that are available, and the prices that they are changing hands for. Spend some time on this, as it will help you to judge what the importer is telling you. Everything else ( agents fee, de-registration, export documentation, shipping etc etc ) is pretty much fixed no matter what you are buying, so the main variable will be the cost of the car. Even though there is a very favourable exchange rate at the moment, please DON'T be tempted to go for the cheaper cars. Spend as much as you think you can afford.
And in the end, I think you will be asked to lay your money down before seeing the car in the metal, and to place your faith in somebody else's judgement and abilities.
I wish you good luck.
