Rev Counter Problem...

My Rev counter on my 260Z (RHD if this makes any difference?!) has suddenly decided to go into a 'Lazy mode' , it is hovering around the 1000 rpm mark and lazily climbs to 2000rpm max regardless of revs , it was working okay prior , so just wondering if anyone on here could point me in the right direction as to what the likely problem might be? Thanks

Have you checked the wiring around the coil?

I'm doing that later today , but i don't think it's that sadly.
