Hi Rob
Part of the reason why Germany is so against modded cars is partly to protect its car industry. There are few classic cars in Germany because of its approval system. This probably is also to protect its motor industry.
Modded cars are availiable but only through recognised companies eg Alpina, AC Schnitzer etc

Yes good point but who goes through an SVA test and would it discover a changed bulkhead?

In my experience all be it a few years old now, there has always been a stigma with the sva/iva tests as generally the people i was concerned with wanted to shy away from it due to the dreaded q plate.
The blokes at the testing centre are not there to 'catch you out'. They are just normal blokes following guidelines.
The cloak and dagger approach will invariably be caught out as they are quite thorough .
Contact them with your proposed idea before you start and they will be more than helpfull so as to help you get where you want to be.
I'll see if I can discretely get some info on the b/h question.
The trouble is with the Datsun apart from the tin plate on the inner wing, the bulkhead stamp is the only id is it not?
A modern posh car nearly every part is identified nowadays.........
