Removing gudgeon pins

Hi,

I want to seperate my 240 pistons from my conrods. Now the pistons are going to make an ornament, but the rods I want to leave perfect. I think I read that they are pressed in, with heat.

Am I going to be able to heat up the piston with blow torch and then tap the pin free? Am I going to knacker anything?

Any real world experience is appreciated, I'd like to have a go at cleaning up the rods.

Thanks

I would have thought it should press or tap out without much difficulty. If it sticks then immerse the piston in boiling water (the piston should expand faster than the pin)
& knock it out. 'course this could be an old (wives) mechanics tale!

phone me and i will tell you how to make your own press to do the job buckshee. out tonight but in tomorrow night

Nice one guys, thanks. Will ring you tomorrow then Ben, I've been meaning to buy a press but so far I've had no reason to use one and it's a waste of garage space.

Cheers

Yes, get piston nice and hot quickly then a wee tap.

I'm sure Ben will be able to help further tonight, but isn't the pin and conrod both steel? Isn't it the conrod that holds the pin in place?

I'm sure all will become clear.
