old brake discs

Having unearthed the front hubs/discs for my car from the depths of my garage, (where they have been for approx 15years) they are covered in heavy surface rust. Whilst I have been given another pair of used front discs ( thanks Zed2K), I was hoping to use the old ones so I wouldn't have to remove the discs from the hubs.

Question is can I satisfactorily remove the heavy surface rust from my old discs with wet and dry paper?. Or will that give me problems with juddering or contamination of the pads or anything unless I get all the rust off? A quick going over them with 120 wet and dry and white spirit got probably 70% of the rust off and a shiny surface back.

Any help gratefully received.

get the loose stuff off then put in an old set of pads and go for a gentle drive. Brake pads being abrasive will clean the discs and show any areas that are warped or too badly pitted to clean up. cheers ben
