Oil leak on 240z with a L28 block and transmission?

Another thing that occurred to me. I’ve got a 240z with an L28 block / gearbox. Don’t I could tell you precisely what bits are 240 or 280. Does that have a baring on things?

No I don't think that'll make a difference.

You also need to be careful that you don’t overtighten the bolts on refitting as the sump pan isn’t particularly stiff and you can distort it. I believe that the 280 has separate stiffening plates that help spread the load. Mine had been over tightened and pushed the gasket out causing a leak at the front. It was a bugger to find though. You could clean it up, start up and sit and watch it all day - no leak. Take it out for a good spin, and then there was oil all over the front of the engine. It was happening when I braked - the oil slushed forwards, up the front of the sump pan, and out.

That's a good point re the bolts. So I have new bolts, new gasket, RTV gasket sealer and Thread Lock.

Do I need to use a torque wrench on the bolts, if so what is the measurement (nm)? Also, I believe there is a pattern for tightening the bolts. Does anyone have a diagram of that? (something like this)

Think I’ve tracked down the leak to the sump cover / seal. Now just need to suss out the removal / refit process. Any further tips on that?

Are you sure its the sump gasket? There is no pressure in there really. I had a leak in the exact same place and thought the same as you.

Turns out it was leaking from the oil pump/block/front cover triple joint and running down the sump pan (the engine is titled back ever so slightly) and eventually dripping from the location you've highlighted.

Just a thought!

Hi. Ok, that's a good point and worth double checking. Thanks for the tip. G

it's about 10nm and just doesn't feel enough so do use the torque wrench to stop myself over tightening.
If you do it In a couple of stages and some form of criss cross pattern it'll be fine.
