oil consumption

I've got a friend with an early 280ZX, during normal running the car doesn't smoke but upon acceleration, there is blackish smoke out the back ! The spark plugs look to be normal in appearance but the car consumes 1ltr of oil every 600 miles !!!

Any clues / solutions ?

He's wondering if there is a problem with the exhaust recycling system and also asks if the valve guides on the N42 head are bronzed ?

He was a member of this site but can, no longer logg in - are non paid up members locked out now ?

Thanks
Sean

Non paid up are still fully on the site.

Why can't he log in? Can he find www.zclub.net at all? Is it his password dead? If you let me know his login I can reset it for him.

providing it hasn't done silly miles, new seals and a set of rings will keep it going on the cheap.

Montpelliers a lovely place.....I busked in PLACE DE COMEDIE for a while and stayed in the youth hostel amongst the Morrocan lunatics....... same oil prob with my Mondeo....about a pint a week in fact..some oil residue around number 1 spark plug, was told the valve seals may have gone when I bought it very cheap...Si

A good clean out of the crankcase vent and the rocker breather might help, failing that put it down to a dodgy ring (s):D

Sean, blackish smoke is normally a rich mixture.

At one time my car used lots of oil but on overrun not acceleration. Though it was guides but it was very worn pistons and rings. The smoke was blue/grey.

oil comsumption

Hello all!

yes i can loggin but i have notice that i couldn't start a new thread now, so...

I have change the valve steem recently, i notice some play between valve and guide, (with the wiggle method, so i hope i have the good feeling...)

yesterday i have change my oil pan seal (whose leak oil a little), and change oil for 10w40 semi synthetic motul
also i have disconnect the hose between block and PCV valve, and close the PCV valve and put the hose to air... i do the same thing to rocker cover hose

Engine is very clean inside (piston, bottom of the head, and down block)
spark plugs are not oily

but my exhaust have some carbonics residue like a diesel (petrol) engine, and on highway i notice that arrive to tollgate i feel oil
some smoke appear on or after high acceleration

i need to do some kms to see if my recent work reduce the problem

thanks
ben

Benoit,

Why have you closed the PCV Valve? The PCV Valve is a one way valve which allows blow by generated by the up and down motion of the pistons to ventialte out of the crankcase and then be recirculated with clean air from the intake manifold to the combustion chamber through the air intake valves.

A closed/blocked PCV valve would create excess pressure in the crankcase which would have to escape somehow and this usually results in leaks by the rear engine oil seal.

Hi George,he says he has put the hoses to air so it should be ok, but being an injection model he should reconnect them. I find modern oils tend to smoke a lot in an older engines, I use a 20/50 in mine. Adrian

PCV valve

I close my system because i suspect the pcv valve not working correctly and so close the crankcase ventilation system and it is possible that this problem cause a oil consumption...

but i know that it is not the right solution, for pollution spécialy...
but this is the better way to know

if my consumption don't drop perhaps i would use 20w50 oil...

i will see the reasult of my modification tonight because i would do 300 kms since my modifications...

Ben

i have done 405kms and now my level is in the middle of the gauge!

The car have probably 167405 kms but also perhaps 267405kms i don't know exactly...
the last owner done 8000 kms in 7 years and i have already done 3500 kms in 3 months!!!

perhaps that the few kms the car have done this 7 last years were bad to the engine, (not enough kms / year) piston rings are probably blocked in there grooves particulary the oil ring groove, because my compression seems to be good (11 bars) and balance...
