'Offical' rallye replica

Funnily enough - considering recent topics on this forum - this particular car was involved in a bit of "official" lying a few years ago.....

The car was featured in the March 2004 issue of 'Vintage Racecar' magazine ( it got the front cover and 8 pages inside ), in an article written by Ed McDonough. In the article, the President of Nissan Italia and the General Manager of Nissan Italia told Ed McDonough that this was the actual '72 Monte Carlo Rallye 3rd place-winning car of Rauno Aaltonen ( Japanese 'carnet' registration number 'TKS33 SA 4150', race no. 5 ) and McDonough believed them.

It was a really poor article. The car itself is not much more than a standard road car with a few bells, whistles and stickers attached to it. It featured the original Hitachi SU-type carbs, the original steering wheel, gear knob and seats, and even had the stock radio. Despite having the mistakes and untruths in the article brought to their attention 'Vintage Racecar' magazine never published any corrections, retractions or public apologies.

The real car is - of course - part of Nissan's 'Memorial' collection held at the former Zama plant in Japan. Just another small detail that appeared to have slipped by them.....

So what does the "official Replica" authorized bit entail, does anyone know or is that just advertising hyperbole?

I'm a novice considering how long my involvement in 240's has been but surely someone must have twigged how standard the interior was for starters to know this couldn't have been the original rally car.
How did no one raise this a the time of publication??

Who wants to be made to look a fool ? All sorts of giveaways if journalist did their homework AND consulted the anoraks.....but it's rare that they do.

Our cars are too rare, too poorly documented (in Euro languages) and what is available is so 'Made in, race in and for the USA' !

I'd address that question to the people at Nissan Italia S.r.l and/or the people selling it, if I were you.
