Noise from the front of the engine

Question for the Z Knowledge Bank out there - a regular, repetitive squeaking/chuffing sound has started from the front of the engine somewhere on my 240Z. It is a standard engine running on triple webers, rebuilt 3 years ago and running quite well. The noise varies according to the revs, it is quite audible outside the car but I can't pinpoint it - seems to be more on the carb side. Any ideas?

I had a similar chuffing noise from my 240. Turned out to be the timing chain tensioner. It had worn through the black insulation and the chain was rubbing.

My first thoughts are exhaust manifold not sealing on the head or gasket blowing (had that a few times) - do you have a tubular manifold, if so they are more prone to it than the cast ones.

Water pump?

Thanks, guys. It's a cast manifold but with the squeaking element to it I think the timing chain tensioner sounds more probable than a manifold leak. Bit of a bigger job though! I'll check he water pump first.
