Inner sills

Are inner sills available anywhere? I found a hole the size of my fist hiding behind the wing :(

Why can't you fabricate something to be welded-in? Replacing a whole inner sill is a big job.

I'm assuming you mean at the side of the foot wells?

Grind it out and weld it up.
I did it 2 years ago with my Z31, aint failed an MOT since.

And the great thing is, it has to be a decent weld, but not a tidy one as no one can see it. :)

Are you refering to the 240/260 front wing - I thought that was part of the replacement sill - try here there is an illustration

Cheers, but isn't that the outer sill only? I will be needing one of those so thanks for the link, but I need to find the insides of the inner front box section and the plate behind (the one with the big round holes in it).

[EDIT] so you guys reckon just welding some plate in there will be strong enough? The thing is there appears to be three layers of steel that have been eaten away, with only the thick layer you see from inside the footwells (with the big round holes) intact. If I got hold of the replacement parts I would only need to replace the front of the sill, the rest (I'm hoping) is ok.

.

Any chance of a photo so we dont suggest the wrong bit again lol

I thought someone might say that! It's kind of hard to see to be honest, it's right under next to where it connects to the floor and I could barely make out what's inside the outer sill. The camera on my phone pretty much stands no chance of taking any sort of usable picture, but I'll try and give it a go tomorrow!

btw. I found out my car has two floors, one on top of the other. wtf.

Like many 240Zs your car has obviously been bodged in the past.
i know exactly what your problem is and I know in detail how the shell is contstructed in that area.
I dont have either the time or the inclination to put up lengthy explanations on here for everyone to view.
If you want to discuss this with me then give me a call on 07778 411568 and I will talk you thru it.

Thanks, I may well take you up on that offer. Bodged would be an understatement, there are quite a few ****** patches as well that will need sorting. I'm pretty p!ssed about the floor situation, ideally both would be cut out and replaced with new pans, but that would be another £350 in parts I can't afford right now. Plus I already POR-15'd the inside and put down £200 worth of sound proofing before finding a drain plug underneath the car that wasn't on the inside. The priority now is to get the car MOT-able and worry about that at a later date I think.

I found a thread showing the construction of the inside of the sills so I can use that as a reference.

Just looked at the link.. He thought that was rusty!.. looked superb. I had a similar problem with the inners sills. the sills looked okay on the outside. but inside was a different matter. They were rotten.. front and rear ends almost gone. I bit the bullet cut the rust out and fabricated new sections. The results were fine and I ground all the welds down as it did not want moisture sitting on any raised weld beads. I then painted the inner sills welded on the new outers and flooded the sections with Dynax.. I do not expect to see any rust coming back for the next few years.. It does not have to be pretty on the inners but it has to be strong.. especially the rear dog leg which has the seat belt mountings on a re enforcing plate..

Wow, mine aren't that bad (I hope)!

I took the other wing off and it looks like there is a hole in the LH sill too in the exact same place :(

Don't know what I'm going to do about that yet as LH sills are NLA in the UK... My phone completely failed at taking a picture, predictably.

LH outer sills back in stock with my US supplier - might have one spare arriving in a special shipment...first come, first served. Depending on shipping cost, there will be a premium to pay over list...

Good to know they will be available again. I'm in no rush so will probably think about it a bit later, or have a go at fabricating the end piece as it looks like that's the only part that needs replacing (though I might change my mind depending on what lies beneath!)

I haven't gotten around to cutting the old end piece off so I'm not sure if it's going to be a full sill replacement yet, but if it is I might be in touch.
