I keep Flashing to quick!

I know this is probably boring to some on here - but I am currently trying to get to the bottom of an issue with my "turn signals". In summary what happens is all indicators work, left and right. No busted bulbs - all checked and changed as needed. Over time the speed of the "winking has increased. On both right and left sides. But only on the indicators. The Hazard switch when pulled works at the normal slower rate. I remember reading that the "winking rate" speeds up when there is reduced load (when you put in LEDS for example) but this should not be the case here. Is it likely to be the flasher unit? Or is it likely to be the switch itself? I am confused by this as all the bulbs work ..........just to fast! Anyone got any thoughts? Thanks in advance! Oh - and in preparation I have ordered a generic flasher unit as it seems one cant get the original items anymore - one of these -

(Item No 2)
Thanks!

I reckon it will be the flasher unit. Is it the correct wattage?

It works better on hazard because the load is greater - twice the bulbs.

On a similar note, i recently fitted led indicator bulbs and was expecting the flashing to increase considerably, but it made only a smalll difference.
Actually an improvement, as they seemed to flash quite slow.
Im assuming old wiring/connections means there is a fair bit of resistance in the wiring already

AND to follow on from that - I took one bulb out to see if it would make any difference - and it made NO difference whatsoever........so that helped!

I had a digital flasher unit fitted to mine which has been brilliant. All the indicators flash at exactly the same speed, nice and steady, regardless of load or how fast the engine is running etc.

Here is a link to the supplier:

My auto electrician advises you need to add an earth when you fit it.

Hope that helps.

I had the exact opposite experience with LEDs on my car. The reduced load slowed the indicators a tad but the hazards stay on constantly - well for a good 2-3 mins before going off. So I went back to normal bulbs.

So in effect the resistance of the bulbs is affecting the charge/discharge time in a capacitor

Time on or off = resistance X capacitance

Assuming the capacitance is the constant, then if your bulbs are all fine, I would suspect either a) the flasher unit or b) your wiring. Have you buzzed out your loom and check resistances? Excluding the bulbs you should have either sub 1ohm or mega ohms and over on the open circuit bits. Could it be that the capacitor in your flashed unit has aged and changed value?

Toopy are your hazards still working with LEDs and a stock flasher unit?

Riddler - that's a great shout I'm going to buy one and have a go. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks chaps for the advice - going to try the flasher unit first, assuming the wiring is as it always has been - famous last words. Mind you - had a quick look in the foot well today, guess I am going to need to see the osteopath again.....
Riddler - that looks good, thanks for the link!

Hi Ali, yes the hazards work fine, they flash a little faster than when using the indicators, but it all works pretty much as it did without the leds
Can't say for sure though that the flasher can is OEM, ive never changed it, unless fourways did 13 odd years ago!

Just to say - thanks for the help and advice posted up. Swopped the flasher relay over for a new one and now it flashes niiiiice and slooow! Thinking bout it - I cant remember when it last did that! I wont tell you how long it took me to find it , or how many ribs I disconnected whilst doing it though........It wasn't where I thought it would be! Still , as always - found the next problem whilst I was doing all this - so as you were! ;)
