Getting the bodyshop to correct the 'improvements' by the previous owner. These holes aren't supposed to be there right? Any other extra unnecessary ones I've missed?

My car - same as yours I think - '72 240 - has those holes and through those holes go the pipes for the dealer-supplied and fitted AC. Did yours not have those when it came? Whether they were factory holes and conveniently used by the dealers or whether they were drilled at the time of fitment, I don't know.

I was also about to speculate AC pipework holes as mine has them and the AC has been removed and I can't see or think of anywhere else where the pipework could have been routed....

Interesting fact, being left hookers they are there to let the water run out on left hand bends
Uk cars never had them as it just runs out from the floor pans, so not needed ! :)

Yeah I think they were for the AC which I'm not refitting. Found this online which shows the panel without the holes:

The car I am about to convert to RHD has similar holes.
The bottom x2 are for the air con hoses the two above are as if the drilled the hose holes in the wrong place the just filled them with mastic

Mines a UK RHD with no air con fitted, hopefully the attached pics might help.

Undoubtedly a dumb question but for purposes of my education why are you keen on welding them if the manufacturer felt it was OK to have them there? Can they not be safely rubber bunged?

Or is it a no no from a rust perspective?

I don't believe any US 240s were shipped with AC so from my perspective even a dealer-added hole is an unnecessary one.
