today i went with a friend to watch Ben at the hillclimb at Harewood house. There was also a classic car show and small autojumble.
the day was overcast and ended with light rain which was sufficient enough to make all competitors change from slicks to wets.
The venue was a tight tarmac track with lots of twists and turns just under a mile long on the side of a very steep hill. The car park was on top of the hill adjacent to the paddock area. If you wanted to get close to a particular bend you could walk to it The majority of the course was in clear view of the car park or the paddocks. You could walk round the paddocks and examine the cars and talk to the drivers and 'pit crews' . A very friendly area but highly competetive. All sorts of vehicles from peoples ordinary road cars through the special sports cars such as Bens to out and out racers. Also proper clean toilet block and fast food vans with reasonable prices.
Marshalling was excellent but very strict and friendly. The timing was electronic and in full view of the spectators on the hillside with a large digital display giving the competitors number, time through a speed trap on the longest straight and a clock running on the last half mile or so to the finish time.
We had a very interesting day and thorouighly enjoyed it. Ben took time out from his preparation to explain to us how the event was run and show us his car. He also supplied our entry tickets prior to the event.
If anyone wants to attend one of these events then i suggest you get in touch with Ben who I'm sure will be pleased to advise you. i think you will find it very enjoyable.
And the club that run this venue also hold training days for people who want to have a go in their own cars to get the feel of it. They even provide a crash helmet, all you do is turn up in a road legal car .
I think that's about it. Thanks to Ben and Dee. we had a great day out and will definitely go again.
