UPDATE: Managed to get a second hand regulator from Mr Muir and a new one from Mr Feeney (that had been returned to him as faulty but which he suspected was perfectly ok).
Auto electrician checked car out today - and it was the ruddy alternator that was at fault!
The bushes on it had worn right down.
Anyway, the resourceful Mt Warburton of Mark's Auto Service in Macclesfield managed to obtain some very similar bushes from a little motor factors place, filed them slightly to make them fit, soldered them in - and hey presto, the alternator started charging again beautifully - reading of 14.378 volts on tickover.
My voltage regulator was obviously working fine - but I fitted the new one from Mr Feeney to be on the safe side (and he was right, there was nothing wrong with it), have kept the one from Andrew as a spare as I had paid him for it (though he asked for nothing) and am now putting my original voltage regulator (which I know is working) up for sale on ebay.
Car now running beautifully again and back on the road! Happy ending.

Hi there firstly many thanks, my old regulator was working fine when removed. It was removed when I upgraded my alternator, I would rcommend that you do the same at some stage in the future, it made a big difference to the way my car performed, especially at high revs where it used to miss, changing the alternator to a higher output internally regulated one cured all the problems and it took an hour to fit!!
Anyway glad you got it all sorted out.

Might consider that in the future, though I have had no 'missing' problems to date. However, I have been quoted £200+ for a combined unit whereas you mentioned paying £100 with club discount. From where?

Thanks for that Steve. I will probably stick with what I have for now because it is all working fine. But if the alternator starts playing up again will then try the combined alternator/voltage regulator. Does it really make that much difference to the way the car performs/runs?

Yes it was SUPERSTART they wre really easy to deal with and had parts in stock.
And it was pretty cheap and is working fine 7000 mile later.

Riddler, I just did the internally regulated 280 zx upgrade- massive difference to idle which is now creamy and much smoother acceleration round the rev range. It was a piece of cake to do and I'd recommend cleaning all your contacts before bolting onto new alt.

Thanks for that - really interesting to know. At present the car is running sweet and I have recently spent a fair bit on it so will be keeping things as they are. However, I will certainly consider the internally regulated alternator if I get any signs of trouble in the future!
