head removal

A little head skim isn't getting that carried away, I suppose the stage 2 cam kit is more than I need but seeing as I need a new one I might as well get a better one, Plus it will also suit the 2.8 engine so lets call it starting the new engine build shall we :rolleyes:.

Rob,
Before going into skimming heads for more compression, have a look at what is there first. Your engine over the years would likely have had work done...inc. being skimmed already. 4.128" is off the top of my head the correct un-milled cylinder head thickness. See what may have been already removed. Might as well consider getting the inlet/oulet side of the head checked for flatness while you are at it.
 
4.248" is the correct figure I think. Some texts had 4.218" as a misprint which is where Ian's memory figure may have come from...?

More skimming may lead to the requirement for cam tower shims...

That was my plan Ian, Might as well make sure everything is as flat as pos before I stick it back together.

I hadn't thought about cam tower shimming, Are they available or can they be made by the engineering shop ?.

I think if the head is flat I might leave alone to simplify the job, I'll see what the guy says.

I found out about another few little gems today from the engineering shop, Apparently the guy had welded a bolt and a stud together to make a cam tower bolt and used another bent one as well lol, This guy must of been a right idiot, It took me less that and hour to pop down the the nut and bolt shop to find two suitable replacements, Must of taken him ages to weld a bolt and stud together.

The head is starting to look nice now though, I also cleaned up the block face today as well as re tapping all the bolt holes and fitting the head gasket ready for the rebuilt head.

I'll take a few shots tomorrow with the camera.

Well as you can see the tensioner has popped out just as Mike and Steve had predicted even though I was sure that my bit of wood had done it's job, (clearly not lol).

I did think I could just get away with unbolting the tensioner and resetting it but I hadn't got a gasket it for it from mike so have ended up stripping the chain right off and starting again from scratch, Once I contact mike tomorrow hopefully I'll order the gaskets I'm short of.

Water pump gasket.
dizzy gasket.
oil pump gasket.
tensioner gasket.

Just a quick tip - if you haven't already done so, make sure that you tap out the M6 threads for the Water pump bolts - it looks like the long one has a broken thread in the 'ole and you don't want to find out later on when the Timing Cover is all nicely bolted on, etc. Same goes for all the M8 Threads for that matter.

Thanks mate, I was already in the middle of tapping out all the holes including all those for the sump which is a bit of a pain lol.

So who knows for sure if the tensioner requires a gasket or not, Mike seems to think not but the bible (his words) How to rebuild your Nissan/Datsun OHC engine says it does ?.

Rob, I had the tensioner 'pop-out' like yours when I did a head-off job once. I got it back in with patience and 2 long screwdrivers, I was so lucky! :thumbs:

I couldn't even see the bloody thing let alone get a couple of long screw drivers at it, Was probably better to do the job properly anyway.

I'm still not 100% its right because the tensioner isn't set quite as far back as the book reckons it should be, But I can't see it going back any further so I'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Another very annoying problem is that I broke a stud again fitting the manifolds, Totally my fault though, I should of used my torque wrench on it instead of my big fat arms :(, I'll have to remove them both again tomorrow and fit one on my spare studs, While I'm having a moan that bloody manifold that came with my weber's has needed a lot of work to fit properly.

LoL yeah wouldn't we all at £750 :eek:.

I was kinda day dreaming about my plans to build up my spare 2.8 engine the other day and was roughly pricing things up in my head as I went, It then occurred to me that I'd seen a 40000 mile LS1 with 6 speed box for sale for £1500 :eek:, And the 2.8 stopped making any sense at all after that :(.

Well the good news is that I got the webers finished today and got the heap running all be it needing fine tuning, But I was hit by a bit of a disaster because something just isn't right with the engine, I believe Mike was right when I called him for even more advice today when he said it sounds like the combustion gases are pressurising the water system some how.

I've no idea how because the block was clean and straight the head had been skimmed and as far as I'm aware the gasket was fitted Ok so I'm afraid to say I'm gutted.

The local garage is picking itu p on Friday because I'm sick to death of working on the ****ing thing at the moment and just want it fixed, Clearly I'm ****ing useless!

I sincerely doubt your that useless mate !! Thats just the way things go sometimes, I know ive had worse disasters and I'm a bloody qualified engineer :rofl::rolleyes: We have a saying in our trade wif all things mechanical,,," If it moves,,it'll bloody break " normally when least expected of course :driving:
