Fuel getting into the oil ? Carburators problem ?

My mechanic is telling me that carburetors needs to be rebuild but I don't really trust him.
The problem is that the car (Datsun 260z) is very hard to start and is not drivable because fuel is mixing with the oil. If you take oil cap and smell it you can feel smell of the petrol. He is saying that carburators needs to be rebuild but I wouldn't be so sure because when I bought the car there was no such a problem and since I bought it the needles in carburators were changed, the valves were polished, plugs and plug leads changed and after that that problem came out.
Do you know what might be the problem and how to fix it or at least check it what it can be ?
Thank you for reply

Why did you change the needles if it was ok before?
It sounds like someone has stuffed up your valves, as that is where the oil is getting into the combustion chamber, recommend you do a compression test.

Fuel mixing with oil?

The only way that can happen is if the carbs are flooding really badly with an electric fuel pump running when engine is not, or the mechanical pump is leaking into the head through the diaphragm, can this happen guys?

I had a sump full of fuel in a VW camper van once when a carb needle valve stuck open. It drained the tank overnight by gravity.

I once had an engine that wasn't firing at all on one cylinder, turned out the fuel was just getting past the ring into the engine.

It wasn't OK because the car was driving on four cylinders then, that's why valves were done, but the fuel wasn't mixing with the oil...

I would check your carbs like suggested above, It could be a float valve sticking then flooding the bowl and sending fuel down the over flow into the combustion camber and then leaking past the rings into the sump,
has this beofe ron my old porsche,

or maybe a leaky fuel pump to like above

hope that helps
