Fitting air con

Ok I want to fit A/C.
I haven't seen how the old USA after market kits where fitted .i would like to know where the evaporater was fitted .
I am guessing that most had a evaporater fitted between the fan motor and the heater box?

The reason I ask is that most of the new kits available here in the uk are basic and simply have a single outlet .

The best kit I can see is from vintage air in the USA .There kit has motorised flaps to split the air flow between dash vents and screen.

Why I ask how the old systems worked .Is that I am kind of thinking along the lines of keeping the original heater box and distribution unit but binning the original fan motor. Then fitting a basic a/c evaporator and fan motor unit under the glovebox with its output being directed thought the original heater box.

I think I still have one of the original Datsun air con manuals down the workshop. I'll see what info it has in it. I think the evaporator was in the passenger foot well so I'm guessing the existing fan unit would suck through it and feed the HAV system in the usual way.

I can help you there as my Lime car had it fitted, its quite simple and you have the right idea about using the original heater box, basically you just put the evaporator in front of the recirculating flap opening usually in a custom box and you can divert chilled air to floor screen and face vents using the factory controls just leave the heater control valve on cold

If you decide to go with vintage air and need some help, let me know and I can assist you. Maybe even stuff it in the boot of the next UK bound Zed.

I'm actually in the middle of doing this.
I bought most of the parts from T7Design:

Evaporator unit

Heater valve
http://www.t7design.co.uk/index.php...ow-control/brass-heater-valve-13mm-1-171.html

Control cable

Water hose bulkhead adapter
http://www.t7design.co.uk/index.php/accessories/bulkhead-hose-adapter-1-2-3-4-narrow-1121.html

I removed the original heater matrix and all of the hoses including the control valve then filled the holes in the heater unit.

I modified the evaporator from twin 50mm to a single 90mm.

I ended up mounting the control valve on the edge of the evaporator unit.
I changed to pull open configuration by removing the bracket that holds the control cable and bending it 180 degrees.

The refrigerant hoses go through the bulkhead just behind the battery, which was planned to be relocated.

I thought I would have to sacrifice my glove box to do it but it looks like I might just about have enough room.
The water hoses will be coming through the bulkhead just to the right of the evaporator.
The only drawback with this set up is that the fan will only draw air from the cabin, the original intake to the scuttle is sealed.
Basically the air is always on re-circulation, which will be an advantage in the Cyprus summer heat.
If I need fresh air I still have windows!

Exactly the same route I have been looking at.
As I have seen the same unit on eBay .but looks like this company can come up with all the goods.
Be interested to know if the glovebox still fits

I was already prepared to either lose it or have to reduce the size of it so anything else is a bonus!
Surprisingly, there is a fair amount of room there after the fan and duct are removed.

After changing the routing of the water hoses behind the old fan bracket I managed to get it all in place without compromising the glovebox.
There is still about the same amount of room in the passenger footwell as when the old fan unit was there.
