Engine cut out at 3000RPM

Hi,
Having an issue where the car will cut out at around 3000 RPM. Not splutter out, the engine/electrics completely cut out when driving. Problem occurs only when driving.

Timing is set 14 BTDC (at idle); carbs are balanced and correct, cylinder compression (195psi across all 6), fuel pressure 5 psi (when standing - can't tell what it is when driving). Temperature normal. It seems like a potential electrical issue to me? when going from 2000-3000 rpm the engine is definitely not giving correct power.

72' 240z, L28 non turbo

Any suggestions appreciated,
Thanks
Brett

Do you have a points distributor or electronic?
If points, check the gap.
If thats not it, I'd get a timing light and see what advance there is at 3k, and if the firing is regular & stable. And even check if the spark disappears at 3k

Thanks Jon -
Distributor is electronic.
Timing (vacuum hose off carb) - was 42 degrees at 2500 RPM. Very Occasionally would lose spark 1 when testing. Car would not cut out at 3000 RPM when standing still, only when driving under load.
I'll run some tests on alternator perhaps.

42 is a fair bit too much. Might well be the problem.
You should reset it to a max of 34 or 35 which will occur between 3 and 3.5k.
