Age is no barrier, I understand that the "Mzee" Waldegard is in his 70's:D

His birthday is in fact 12 November 1943, that makes him 63.... Six years younger and he's more practising then Aaltonen.

AUTOSPORT SHOW - NEC 11-14th JAN 2007

Surinder Thatthi - Event Director and Clerk of the Course of the 2007 East African Classic Safari Rally will be at the Autosport Show in NEC. He will be based at the stall for David Sutton Cars and Historic Motorsports LTD.

If any of you have any questions about the next event, he will gladly answer them.

He will be there on all four days.

....... 10 months and counting to this Epic Rally .... Will it be another Datsun Win?!!

Hi Hatari,

After reading your post of the 04 January, 07 regarding the car driven by Rob Collinge to win the 03 EASR, I felt I should clarify some information concerning the 240Z he drove.

The car was in fact purchased by Collinge from Stewart Wilkins Motorsport in Sydney and shipped to Nairobi for the event. Stewart and his son actually went over and were the service crew for Collinge.

For the next event Stewart built a new engine for the car which as you know won again.

I have attached a copy of an article written by Stewart for the Australian Rallysport Magazine about Collinge acquiring the car and their experiences with the rally and car preparation. Stewart is one of the most knowledgeable people on Datsuns and Z's in particular for rallying around this part of the world.

Robs "Magic" Car!!!

Hi Jeff,

Thank you for the corrections.

My post of the 4th Jan 2007, was infact taken from the 2007 EASR Website. Most of the Safari Enthusiasts all know that the car was from Stewart Wilkins   but Rob “tinkered” with it, hence the “Locally prepared” quote in the Article.

Thanks for your attached article. It would be a pleasure to see some pictures that you may have of the car? May be some more news of what is happening with any other entrants / cars being prepared in Australia for the 2007 event?

PS – I totally agree with Jim Heather Hayes – In Kenya it is better to have a head on Crash than hit a pot-hole!! :D :D

This event should be another fantastic advert for the 240/260 (I hope) and encourage even more interest in the car.

Steve Perez is not short of money is he? A Focus WRC, Lancia Stratos and now a 260! Vodka Kick sales must be doing well.

The world isn't fair is it Hugh?

Who said that life was fair? !!

Steve Perez has lots of money but really enjoys his rallying, in modern and historic cars.

He supports events such as the Roger Albert Clark Rally and a road rally in Derbyshire, lends his cars to people and sponsors a number of other drivers and teams. Lots of respect for what he does with his money in our sport.

I am sure that Laurence will build him a really good car and hope that he gets it to the finish. His only disadvantage will be lack of experience of this type of event. He will have the equipment and back-up and can certainly drive. Good luck to him.

Hugh

Interesting Links!

Imitiaz Dewji is getting his website going for the 2007 Event!
The website is not fully live yet. Visit it regularly for updates and more pictures. Imitiaz completed the event after a huge off on day two!

Another interesting site - with great pictures and some fantastic clips.
Hardev Sira, never say die!! Completed the event in 2005 after a massive collision with an Antelope!!!

I make Datsun that most popular car for the Safari Rally!!!

For those of you that attended the Autosport Show, there were two EASR Ford Escorts on Display of which one was Gerard Marcy and the other from Historic Motorsport Ltd, the car to be driven by Bjorn Waldegard! They will be in Kenya Testing in March! .....They really want to win this event.

They Keep Coming in!!

Another Z entered in the EASR

23. Jayant Shah / Lofty Drews - Tanzanian Based - Datsun 260Z

Last year they did the event in a Datsun 180B. The Datsun 260Z never made it to Kenya after being shipped from Australia for the 2005 event. Jayant and Lofty make a good team and they have alot of Safari Back ground. Lets hope they can do even better this year! If the car is anywhere near the other Australian built cars, then they have as good a chance as any other!

Sounds absolutely great...I'm looking forwards to some more footage from
2007 & a bit more insight into the overall East African Safari Experience.
Cheerzzz DJZ 60.

The best "insight" into the event will be getting yourself down to Kenya. :D :D If you are keen and need to know more, just get intouch.

Temptatation. My mum & sister are going to Mombasa this year, & I
will check on my workload & see if I can find space this year.
How often, & at what time intervals..,do you spend over there?
Cheerzz DJZ 60.:)

They Keep Coming In!!!!

Another two Zeds for the East African Safari Rally!!

24. J Savage / Q Savage Kenya 260Z

Father and son team who finished a commendable 10th in their first attempt in the 2005 event!! They have been competing in the Local Championship calender and been doing extremely well in the 2wd category, winning alot of the events . Another podium for the Datsun?

25. P Harland / M Hardland Kenya 206Z

Don’t know anything about them, no idea where the car is from? No idea of who they are! :conf2: :conf2:

Of the 25 Entries already received there are 7 Datsun 260Z's and another three Datsun 180B's. Still the most popular car to be in!! ...In Kenya they say "Kenya is my country and Datsun is my Car!":D :D

We are hoping Imitiaz will put in entry in soon (in the Z -farm prepared 240Z)

Rallying Stars All Set to Test Car in Kenya

Two of the world greatest Rallying Stars are set to condust a test Prgramme in Kenya from March 5-12 ahead of Decembers East Africa Classic Safari Rally.

Bjorn Waldegard and Stig Blomqvist will be assessing the set up of the Ford Mark 1 Escorts that wil be shipped from Britain Next month. Surinder Thatthi the event director said he was in negotiations with the two former World Champions on the possibility of test driving the car in the KCB Safari Rally in March. The KCB Safari Rally is the 2nd round of the African Rally Championships and coincides with the Test Programmes. Ford Historic Motorsport Ltd may be using one of the cars as route opener in the KCB Safari Rally.

Fords are out for the win this time round and with Stig and Waldegard at the wheels, the Datsuns face a tough onslaught! Testing this early only means one thing .... Ford wants to win the event.

Ford were out for the win on the 2003 and 2005 events, suffice to say they did not expect the Datsun to spoil the party:D . But I suspect they will be third time lucky:eek: , unless we have late entries in a Daty from Juha or some other "experienced" driver in a well prepared car. As you know, the Fords are a works team and hence their car preparation and back up is A1.

I would rather see a 911 take the honours:devil:

Update from Stewart Wilkins Motorsport in Australia, he is very busy leading up to the EASR. He has three 180B shells he has to prepare for some Kenyan entrants (could be the 3 mentioned in the ealier post from Hatari) as well as a 260Z for J Savage and a new motor for the chap who purchased Rob Collinge's car, apparently they missed a gear during some practice and blew the motor.
