Clear Smoke From Airbox?

Hi All,

My standard 240z engine / carb set up has developed a habit of spewing clear smoke on start up, when the engine is warm.

I first noticed it after a 45 min run. Having stopped for a coffee for around 20 mins, smoke appeared when restarting the engine.

Today I have tried to replicate it and have been carefully checking all levels and temps in different circumstances e.g. stop / start traffic. Everything was fine until once again I re-started the engine after a 20 minute break. It lasts for a few seconds and then clears.

The smoke is emerging from the airbox via the air filter and carbs. The airbox does have a crack but I can't imagine that has anything to do with the issue.

Any clues as to what could be causing this and potential solutions would be gratefully received.

Thanks, Nick.

By clear smoke do you mean, white smoke, mist or what??

If its a whispy oily smoke it can be the rocker breather feed to the airbox and excess rocker pressure due to worn valve stem seals or crsnk case pressure from worn rings

Thanks for answering.

It's a pale white smoke, almost transparent.

There are some very slight oil splashes in the engine bay. I am thinking there could be some oil escaping and burning up (hence the smoke only when the engine is warm) having had the US spec emissions **** removed.
