Bolt types on S30

Guys,

I recall a discussion last year on types of bolts a Z takes but I can't find it - what is it: metric fine? metric coarse? Metric silk?

Thanks in advance,
Ali

I just ordered a bunch of stainless caps crews for my engine cases etc. I didn't specify the thread pitch but the bolts are standard (also referred to as coarse). I ran a set of standard metric taps through before ordering . There may be one or two metric fine on the car but I haven't come across them yet.

I always thought S30s used the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS), scales very similar to metric but has a finer thread pitch past 8mm

There are both types used depending on the materials used ad the purpose

Nice! :(

OK so let's play a "fine or coarse" game:

Fuel filler neck: fine or coarse?
Engine bay brake line clips: fine or coarse?
Engine inspection lamp: fine or coarse
Engine block hoist point brackets: fine or coarse?
Bonnet bolts: fine or coarse?
Boot lid struts and hinges: fine or coarse?

Or is there an easy way to know what they fitted where?

(Ps. Those are the rusty bolts I like to replace!)

I think Morbias is correct most threads above 8mm are metric fine, difficult to find especially in stainless of High Tensile!!

Thanks fellas, really appreciate your help.

Rob, looks like you just added to my toolkit

I got some nuts for the suspension tops 6 for around a fiver from a place on the net will see if I can find the name, they came with that yellow ish tint that matched some of the other stuff I had replated from Pmac when I had the engine bay painted. I can't show you a pic as for some strange reason no matter how I try I can't seem to post any pics?

Thank you for trying - I know the site can be a pain sometimes.

He's so damned good at the plating thing (have some of his plated stuff).

I have used Orbital fasteners in the past, have quite a lot of stainless.

You're a gentleman Andrew - thank you!!

Most of the M10 nuts and bolts will be 1.25 pitch with a 14mm head but some of the M10 bolts on the engine are 1.5 pitch like the engine mount bracket bolts so it a good idea to check first.

Thanks Mogs!

One of my engine lift out bracket thingies (fuel pump side) was loose so I tried to undo it and it sheared with the gentlest of pressure. Thank goodness I wasn't pulling the engine at the time!

I need to drill that one out and retap methinks. Any advice? I hear it's a no.1 female dog!!

I would leave it unless you are taking the head off as ideally it needs matching out.
