1973 M, can I use black no' plates without getting a tug?
Will they pass an mot?

Am putting Black and silver plates on my 1971 240 when it is finished - not sure when the cut off is, think it might be 1972 but I have no doubt an appropriate poke, slap or put down will make it more accurate .....
Bring it on, I'm doing my best :)

as far as i am aware the cut off is the same as tax exempt cars so all cars 1973 onwards should not be using black number plates or it is L plate onwards, one of them is correct. but to be honest i dont think MR PLOD will be that bothered as he has proberly just tried to get you for speeding.

true if you obey it to the letter. It'd be a bit obvious if your car had a suffix letter but if you had a cherished number?

I found V8 AWF - my initials but can't put it on because V is newer than my car

Yeh its 73 on that require new plates. However if its a classic looking car (pre 280 I reckon) then you'll get away with it. What irritates me is roy bacers in black golfs, 3 series and such with the black plates, on a car no more than 10 years old. Grrrr (got that off my chest hooray).

I'm pretty tempted myself. Strictly speaking my car is M reg but has an L reg plate on it, L crosses '72-'73 so I could probably get away with it. Would certainly look a lot nicer on the back than the large yellow rectangle :(

Cheers,
Rob

Sod it.
I will be buying a set of black plates
Just wait till the next car show so I can take me pic of style

Top answer 900SS - they are hardly likely to get p*ssy over black plates on a 25 year old car plus.

Hi,
On a classic looking car you shouldn't have too much trouble from the law, but may you fail at MOT time if the examiner goes by the book!....you can always keep some reflective ones to use at that time.
My old 300ZX had small square number plates with undersize lettering and I never had any problems from the Police or mot station. They are clamping down on illegal no. plates at the moment though!...So you may have to have them made as "show plates" from one of the many companies on the web.
Cheerz,
JEZ
