Advice..time for engine work

its a US 280 fuel injected car

Would this be a low compression head...guess so?

I wanna ditch the FI and stick a set of triple webers on and the hairy exhaust header and system I have.

Thing is.....what else should I do to aid performance whist head is off.....to what degree should I skim it and should I be changing the cam

Nothing too technical please.

probably.
This place is good for understanding your head/block combo: http://datsunzgarage.com/heads/
I had a thread a couple of months ago about my timing chain and the Kameari twin idler, and there was some great advice in there from skiddell on how to figure out how much to skim the head.
I'll try to find it if you can't ....
dunno about cam. a big one I think.

Looks like I have the N42 head...Thanks

I guess I need a good engine man

Anyone know of such a person??

Ill get in there before the others, Charlie at CTM Engineering in Dagenham. Tel recomended him and the work was good and for a reasonable cost

Is charlie still about, must be getting on now,had a head done for 1 of my 240's about 10 years ago,he done a nice job,he was woring for burton performance back then,

No need for any technial..........................Z specialists hae been building these engines for decades without any technical knowledge
Just follow the samuri route.
Stick your triples on..big ones I hope!

And " the hairy exhaust header and system I have."
Skim the head massively. Dont forget to hog out the ports to their max size.
Add a cam....."dunno about cam. a big one I think. ".....Yes a big one remember the samuri tuning principle ..bigger is better.

Just send it all to Dave Rebello
He will set it all up to make 300bhp on his dyno:bow:

Whereas [insert name of your favourite 'engine expert' / 'tuner' here] will build you the engine that they want to build, will probably not be able to to tell you how much it's going to cost you, or when it will be finished, but will tell you it would certainly give over 450hp on that famously optimistic Rebello dyno....

Ironically enough, a 'Plug And Play' complete Rebello engine may in fact be just the thing for somebody like Mr vipergts. It's hard to argue against in relation to bang for buck and time not wasted.

Last complete N42/N42 engine I sold went for £500. That would be a decent downpayment on something from Mr Rebello...

I don't think it's needs to be anything trumpy

Doesn't need huge horses or bottom end business

Didn't wanna skim head without looking at cam and valves whilst there....Need Triple Webers too.

Just need to know the specifics from someone that's done the same think to one of these wheezboxes

I didn't speak to Charlie myself (far too lazy :) ) but I've heard from many different people (the Ford boys especially) that he's the man to talk to. They also recommend Connaught Competition Engines in Sittingbourne which may be close to you, no idea if they would be happy to look at a L series but may be worth the visit if you local

What sort of money do they charge for an engine?

Perhaps that question would be best answered by pmac and skiddell, as they know all about them...

Sadly Mr T on this rare occasion your wrong:eek: .....oh sorry you were being uncharacteristically sarcastic

But what I do know is that their returns policy is going to be interesting:rofl:

Wrong about what though? That you don't know Rebello's prices, or that you know all about their engines?

You've made plenty of comments about them, so I presumed you knew what you were talking about.

Yes Sittingbourne not too far away thanks...will follow that up

Sorry OP apologies for going a little off topic, but just in reponse to Mr T

Yes of course I do know "some" of their pricing, and yes I have "some" experiance of their engines and yes I have had correspondence with several owners about HP differentials but thats hardly knowing "all" about them is it.
I think "our" point is that from a technical perspective some of the claims made about HP appear to be significantly inflated and not repeatable anywhere outside of a small town on the west coast of the US......other than that I am sure they are just fine.

Sorry Mr GTS

But you could say that about most... if not all... so-called 'tuners', engine builders, rolling roads and engine dynos in the UK and beyond. It's all part of this tyrannical focus on horsepower, torque and quarter mile numbers that people are so obsessed with these days. Why the particular venom for Rebello?

Whatever happened to driveability, character and flavour? For a street car (which is what we are concerned with here) these things are arguably more important.

There are a few numbers that are important, but don't get talked about all that much: Price/cost, and the number of days, weeks, months and sometimes years that they take to get built, delivered and installed.

I suspect Mr vipergts would like an engine with good driveability, nice character and good flavour (try putting that into numbers) and would like to know how much that's going to cost him, and how long he's going to have to wait for it.
