280ZX Steering Nasty Crunching Noise

After driving about this evening, the car has developed a nasty rubber crunching type noise when you turn the steering wheel.

There is no noise when the car is static and you spin the steering wheel. But if the car is moving and you turn the steering wheel there is a nasty rubbery crunching noise from the passenger front wheel.

Can see anything obvious, any ideas? All of the joints and bushes are new.

Cheers

Is the noise only there while you're turning the wheel, or does it continue if you hold it steady (off straight ahead)?

Had a good look tonight and it appears to be the rack moving in the clamps causing the god awful noise. This only happens at full left lock with the wheels off the ground.

At full left lock the hub hits the stop bolt stopping the wheel turning any further, as it should, but the rack continues to move for about a further 5mm back on itself. When the wheels are on the ground the rack moves slightly under load.

The bushes are urethane and are new. I am unable to tighten them any further as the clamps are hard up against the cross member so are fully tightened down.

Any thoughts as to solve this?

in old cars in general the rack can move on the mounts a little bit - are you saying that this noise is because of the rack moving or is this something you have observed and is just an 'as well as'...?

On a fault finding basis then cheap choice is to skim the rack clamps a very small amount with a grinder so they grip firmer, or as a temp bodge pack the clamps with some rubber hose cut down its length and put over the existing bushes, couple of layers of heat shrink tubing laid flat over bushes might also work....clamps will then bite more...

I would have also gone with top shock bearing / mount problems if noise you describe coming from one front corner of car when turning.
