19th June Drag Race Challenge Round 4

So here's a gauntlet if anyone wants to pick it up.

If any NA Z (modified class but I will include 3.1's) can beat me, I'll donate £25 to the club --

So bring it on and take your best shot:devil: .

I have to say that the turn out was poor even for those not wishing to race. Where were all of the club members who "care" so much about the club.

Well your loss guys, twas a great day.

i would have loved to have been there.....a gauntlet laid down eh......we'll just have to see wont we!:D of course the fastest time laid down for a tt is still owned by a 2+2....we'll have to do the same with the z's wont we!:p if not with my engine it'l be with another!:D

The jet car running at just over 6 secs
On their second run at 6.1 seconds, the body disintegrated going through the lights at 260+ mph! With no chutes or aerodynamics the car was written off at the far end of the track. Thankfully the driver walked away - a credit to the safety systems in operation on these cars.

Gives a whole new twist to the classic Michael Caine "..blew the bl***y doors off..." quote.

Ye Gods... bet that was a "change of undies" moment...

Puts my "Throttle stuck open" on the straight mile into perspective!

Sorry I wasn't there - it was a lovely day for it. Like I said, if I want to go away Sat AND Sun in a couple of weeks time I had to pay the politics at home! I've got JAE to look forward to as well though.

Was a great day - just far too hot, I could stand only about 20 mins at a time in the stand at a time, did get to see a fair bit of action though.. I (as has everyone that has had a go at this) have well and truly got the bug now.

At the beginning of the day I said that I would be happy if I was in the 13s, but after I did that on my first ever go, 13.3 @108 (with some not too great driving, too much wheelspin, and trying to stay in 3rd..) I was then after a 12!

It was not to be though, I had a truly appalling 2nd run, I was too busy waiting for someone to arrive next to me at the start line (nobody did), and not watching the lights..

3rd run I thought was a bit better, but still wheelspan 1st and 2nd, and was a 13.4.. so was a bit gutted.

I will definitely be back though, I'll try and pick up a few more tips, and maybe talk to the previous owner who got 12.56 @ 112 (who said he was fighting against tramping!?)

cue excuses, after waiting in the pit for bits of jet car to be scraped up, the jtuner stand was being dissambled, so had to put my sub, jack toolkit etc. etc. in the back.. was a bit annoying

Congrats to steve, car looked and sounded amazing, and the time was great especially considering everyone I spoke to said they were .2-.5 secs slower than their last time out..(or do they always say that?)

Was good to see chunk going for it as well!

i wasnt joking about the Mickey Thompsons. While your Kumho v70a tryres(which Chunk and me use also) are very good, they are probably not going to put you in the 12s.
Later in the day as the pro car Jap boys were packing up I took the opportunity to have a look at some Mickey Thompsons off one of the quick Liners. Size 275/40-17 and on poking them they appeared to be made out of black chewing gum! With just a couple of little grooves here and there that were pretending to be tread!
The way I see it is this....
More traction allows more revs on launch so you are up to full power revs quicker and are putting more power down from the first one hundredth of a second. So ETs will be better.
An interesting proposition I think.
I would love to hear from anyone who has real time experience of these tryes or something similar.
BTW. Stories from "your mate" in a bar dont count, as dont stories from around the camp fire at all main Z club meetings.

I was at Brands Hatch last year when a couple of former F1 cars put on a demo. My friend had a pit pass so we wandered into the Benetton F1 car's garage. Tyres were remarkably sticky - you could hear it as it rolled over the painted concrete floor. Sounded like velcro! And no kidding, you could roll the car with one finger when it was on its mats (I did!). Couldn't believe how soft & sticky the tyres were!

No playing with ignition timing grolls, im still to get under the car and check it out hopefully nothing to serious, but next time i shall take pmac's advice and get lots of runs in and start doing things scientificly not just trying to hammer it down the track

Mike,

Thanks for a great day out on Sunday. Had to leave early, I was likely to melt!
Met a good number of Z club members. Great guys and all very friendly and helpfull.

Look forward to the next meeting

Kev

but next time i shall take pmac's advice and get lots of runs in and start doing things scientificly not just trying to hammer it down the track
The great unwashed out there Neil believe that all you do is hammer down the track and you get a 10 sec or lower time.
To your great credit you have owned up to trying that and finding that you actually go slower.
Its probably time to book some more quality time with our Uber Podmeister Mr F. sit in the stand with him and watch, listen and learn.
Then you will start to see what a totally mind occupying sport drag racing really is, and I am sure by perseverance you will start to improve your times.
Good mental preparation is very important. So be there at 9.00am sharp next time out in July and bring with you a private mental target that you ARE going to achieve.
Oh dont forget octane booster , tyre pressures, no extras in car etc etc too.
And dont forget to fit them new spark plugs!!

Total results soon - I haven't forgotten, but just a bit busy catching up and cooling down today...

I must admit, I didn't think there would be as much to it as there is, after seeing how well it can be done (and how badly). I am now finding out how to read the timeslip, would be very interested in seeing what other peoples timeslips are like as well, I'll put mine up once MrF has put up the official results.

I also don't think there is any way to practice without going and doing it, lots of times, I hope I can get to a 'normal' rwyb day and get planty of runs in.

A couple of things I'll be doing at the next one, strip out anything I don't need, put my tyre pressures down from the 28 I ran last time (I thought that was soft!) to 20psi.

Concentrate on better launches, and quicker shifts.

Hope for a colder day, and try a couple more psi boost..

practicing "on your own private road" is of no help, cos of the surface.

And them Kumhos will stand running at 12-14 psi without significant wall deformation;)

And while I make light hearted comments about "lessons with the Podmeister/ God etc" i simply cannot emphasize too strongly the enormous talent and wealth of information we are fortunate to have in our Club by virtue of Mike being our Motorsports co-ordinator at Santa Pod.
Ignore his advice at your peril.
After all do any of you know anyone else who has done SUB 10SEC runs regularly and is also a fully qualified teacher with the ability AND patience to take time out to teach us.

We are not worthy..... We are not worthy.... etc.

Thanks for the advice - will try about 15psi next time!

You are also very right about MrF, If I hadn't spent the morinign in the stands with him, I wouldn't have known what an earth to do.. At least I now know more about what I'm trying to achieve, although definitely no where near it as yet!

I just have to get my next pod date booked, unfortunately I'll be at a wedding for the next retro cars show..

Dont worry about missing the Retro Show, it will be another 3 runs only day and there wont hardly be a Jap coupe in sight. Just hoards of FFFFF..rds, vauxhalls Bbbbbeeeetles etc. Waste of time(IMHO)
Just save up them petrol coupons for Sun Jul 17th, round 5 of Z Club challenge. Its just a normal RWYB day.(No Joe Public clogging up the roads, we get to park in the pit lane) So that means the earlier you get there the more runs you can fit in for your £15.Six, eight ,ten? Who knows!
Expect to find 2 red SWB slicktops, one charcoal grey one, a blue 240Z and a Z31 300ZX freshly painted all parked up in the fire up road just after 9.00am!!
Or in forum guise... pmac, steveJ, Chunk,Skiddell and Neil300ZX.
Hope you can join us.
Oh ...and maybe a very quick 350Z????

IMHO it will be nice to go to a show that doesn't have row upon row of Scooby's / Supra's / FTO's blah blah blah yeah seen 'em all a million times carbon turbo nutta bastard wide boy bling bling baby.

Retro Mag' is the best publication out there if you ask me, modified classic's right up my street.

Perhaps when I'm a 50 year old git, I'll buy something a bit newer to make me feel young again :D;)

LOL:D :D

Pete, there will be a select few japanese  chariots at the show, old violets/cherries/sunny's/1200's/celica's/corolla's/mazda's etc...Oh and maybe a few s30's as well. There was one last year ;)

It will be an excellent venue to see the classic lancia's/fiats/opels/f*rds etc etc from the 70's era, all modified. All very different from going to a car show today where all you see is alloys, carbon, sound installs etc, stuff that money can buy, but not taste!
