Hi,

I'm not a numpty so I should be ok when checking her over but are there any important things to check?

1973 DATSUN 240 Z
1973 new MoT, used daily, stainless steel exhaust system, wire wheels, CD player, engine good, needs TLC.

New Mot so should be fairly safe lol and driveable.

Gonna ring to have a look tomorrow hopefully.

Cheers

Structure is everything - it is easy to check bodywork an dinterior, but don't buy a Z unless you spend a lot of your time looking at chassis rails, floor pans, inner wing flitches, inner rear arches, rad support panel and bonnet support panels. Don't expect to see many Zs without repairs in these areas, but look for quality of repair - have new panels been used or just patches with spots of weld? Have chassis repairs been made with long runs of continous box section or a series of little patches over many years? In other words, has any necessary restoration been done properly or just with a view to cheapness?
Engines are pretty bullet-proof and shouldn't be rough or noisy. Gearbox synchros are quite weak, so check 1 - 2 upshift and 4 - 3 and 3 - 2 downshifts carefully. Try selecting 1st, then selecting reverse to check for movement of gears on the shaft - this should be a noise free and non-traumatic experience.
Body repairs - do sills still show correct body to floor join and seam overlap of rear wheel arch repair? Have rear wheel arch repairs been slapped on over the old rust? Were the inner arches repaired before the outers were added? Did the subtle swage line along the rear body get obliterated? Are replacement panels all lined up with good panel gaps? Any fibreglass panels? All badges and stainless trim present?
Interior - most vinyl and plastic parts available for 240Z and some 260Z, but not cheap. Figure between £40 and £100 a piece for missing or damaged interior panels and over £200 a pair to sort out knackered seat vinyl.
Not obtainable: roof skin to replace the sunroof fitted in the eighties, inner wing flitches, rear quarters hard to get, front valence in original metal hard to get and expensive, new rear lights, wing repeaters. Door skins, radiator support panel, air tubes and rear panel now only available as expensive repro panels. Anything can be made if you are prepared to meet the cost.

Thank you very much

I think I'll print that off and get revising it. The car is 250miles away so I'm gonna have to quiz him on the car by e-mail as best I can.

Any ideas how much hiring a transporter would be please? Say for two days?

He has replied to my e-mail as

"Don't have any pics of area to weld. It is the front offside/drivers side box section chassis. About 18" long. I have bought the part it just needs welding on. It would be about an hours work. The car will drive onto a transporter or whatever."

And the one I hoped to look at today, well the advert was taken off autotrader an hour after I found it I will ring the person anyway tho... its only 35 miles from me and similar price WITH Mot.

Thanks very much

Hi Ben

Thanks v much, how much will that cost? Is it a long winded job as I am keen to learn and get stuck in and I've changed just about every part of my 306 so I would like to lend a hand if your doing it outside of your work or at least make the tea

Hmm this is a pic of the car, I spot red seats and red bumpers, is this such a good idea?

£1750. What do you guys think? I know its only little things but seems like its been messed around with a bit. Spose that doesn't matter tho, that's half of restoration, correcting someone elses work

Hmmm

On an availability note concerning bumpers - centre section rear no longer available in any form, even USA spec on import. Corner rears still available, but about £90+ each. I have a current problem with front bumpers in that Nissan seem to have wrapped up their old stock of USA spec parts and labelled them with our UK / Euro part number. Will let you know if this issue is resolved one way or another!

In short, buying a car with non-original bumpers is not such a good idea at present unless you like what has been fitted!

Seats can be easily recovered - excellent reupholstery kits available. However, don't forget that red was an OEM option interior colour on the 240Z (along with blue, tan and white). An original red interior would be quite a rare find and has a certain anorak appeal......

Excellent thanks for that

I know someone who is superb at making panels so no doubt they could make bumpers and I could get them chromed. Would cost about half a million but lest its still an option.

Thanks for that

I was hoping for a black exterior respray with red interior anyway...

Lets see how the money tree (loan company) grows.

Hi Russ,
I am one of the anoraks that Mike Feeney refers to!. IE I have a car with a non black interior. Mine is blue. one of two or so in this country . Makes finding replacement panels REALLY difficult!! Mike used to be an anorak too, he a one with a white interior!
So what have you got:- dodgy paint, no bumpers, shot it gbox, dodgy interior? lokks like the wheels are pretty awful too, and you still havent got up close to it to follow Mikes excellent buying advice. Dont go without an eperienced 240/260 man with you and see it in broad day light. Needs to be jacked up or preferably on a ramp. in my opinion this looks more like a Rover than a Datsun. (ie its a dog.) Have you got at least £4000 to fork out on top on the asking price? You will need it. And you might then own a car which is worth a lot less than you have spent. Im not saying that is wrong its up to you to decide. Just proceed with extreme caution.

Hiya,

Thanks for the advice

I think I will skip this car actually and get some more money together, theres a v nice looking 240z in Yorkshire up at the moment and it looks much tidier, like mint almost and its only £700 more.

Cheers guys

Hi Russ
Just a short add on piece to keep you in the picture. Nice 240Zeds probably start at £5000. . Very nice start at £7500. Mint? £8000 and upwards. Just depends on the definition of mint. So £2500 might buy you a useable car? Possibly.
Just one guy's opinions, not facts. Any other 240/260 men out there with another viewpoint to help Russ?

To be honest I really don't want a v good condition or mint one, not that I could afford one if I did.

I'm not looking to restore it to as factory either, I'm looking to keep the Datsuns lines, some nice wheels and then some authentic looking interior with a few trick dials etc, nice sounds and the main feature will be the engine.

For this reason I'm looking for something thats fairly well structurally but if its got a tatty interior or the paint is v faded, the gearbox and engine can be missing really, it doesn't matter.

Maybe I should look for a rolling car or something like that. Of course I can always donate parts not required to others or keep them stored away so one day it could be restored...

Cheers

Russ

If you are after a Z that is solid, I Know of one that has been awaiting a paint job in a garage for over 4 years. The car is rock solid and has never had any welding done. The engine has been overhauled and so have the mechanicals. All it needs is a good respray. The bumpers/chrome is excellent and the interior is perfect. No rust in tailgate/doors/rear 1/4 panels whatsover. No sunroof too!
The car is an very early 260 2 seater so, it shares all the stuff with the 240's.
As a bonus, it a geniune "fairlady" badged Z that was imported into the UK by a returning US naval officer. So it is definitely collectable and unique.
"Pmac" has inspected this car and can give you his honest opinion.

Car is based in Heathrow area and any inspection by Z club members is welcome
