Hello, everyone.
I recently started thinking about buying an old car. Maybe a 1974 260z or 1972 240z something like that. I have a 2010 Golf GTI, but I like picking on cars and would like to make something almost new out of something old :)
Maybe you could tell me what is the best thing to buy and if it can be bought in Australia? Thanks in advance.
 
Welcome! Definitely jealous of you being in Australia, having been to Sydney and having family out there I borrowed their car while there, ironically a Golf as well, think it was a 2008 R32, and really enjoyed driving on the roads out there, although I know the Police are pretty hot on speeding. I think the 240 and 260 are pretty rare out in Australia, you might know better than me. That said, the ones there should be in better condition than the ones we have here due to the climate. Failing that you could import one but I don't know what import levies there are on classics in Australia. I am sure someone will be along shortly to advise better than I can but thought I'd say welcome anyway.

Thank you. Do you think cars are preserved better in our climate? Why is that? I never thought of that. Maybe I haven't had anything to compare it to.
 
I think based on your climate, in the UK the winters can be quite harsh, salt on the roads etc, something you guys wouldn't have over there. Most S30s will have been around for 55-45 years and would have seen a lot of seasons meaning a lot rotted away resulting in the remaining cars commanding a higher price.

You're comparing it to the UK, I get it. Yes, it is very humid in the UK, I agree. Metals don't like humidity. Old cars are made of metal, so they might be better preserved in Australia.
I don't like rain at all. You probably get used to it?
 
When I lived in OZ we lived near Canberra and people would say don't buy a car from Sydney as they rust due to the sea air.

They probably don't rust as badly as in the UK. But it really is drier towards Canberra.
