Troubles Ahead??

Right then.....

back to basics

I thought I had the car running spot on, until I put her back on the road as a daily driver until someting else is ready again.

But not so.

She runs, and she doesn't blow a hose, temps are good, so not too bad. At least something worked out good.

Final checks revealed water still leaking very slightly from the top cap and inspection revealed that the seal was proper corroded, so a quick call to MJP and a new one arrived and was duly fitted.

However, she just aint right.

At low revs, it doesn't sound right, and the power and smoothness previously known isn't there. Revs drop to about 400 when coming to a stop. Coming off the gas produces a pop from the zorst too.

However, once I nail the thottle, I hit 2800 rpm and I get a kick as the power hits back to all 6 cyls, and the smoothness is there again, taking me rapidly to the 5.5rpm range.

What is the problem?????

When the water hose popped, nearly the entire right bank and everything right of centre was coated with water. I changed the dizzy, cap and arm, with spares that I had lying around.

What else am I missing, or what else could be causing the problem??

And help or advice much appreciated

Hope

I hope the head gasket has'nt gone! if the cap, hose & internal h20 channels are full of
silt & corrosive sediment & its gone beyond that temperature....then its a possibility that
things are wet where they should'nt be,& dry where they should be wet.
I do hope its not that,& the problem is a minor one,& one that'll easily be
sorted out soon.:) DJZ 60.

I'd check the fuel / ignition system Plug leads / injector connectors and the Throttle Position Sensor connector for liquid.

oh yeah and the Crank angle sensor connector too, just to be sure:)

Thanks, I'll be looking at as much as I can Saturday

Almost a tank of gas in 150 miles is pretty expensive. :)

If it's doing strange things at idle, it may be worth checking the connections to the Idle control valve too, that's in the middle of the plenum on the right hand side.

it's just pants below 2800rpm, after that it's very much alive.

Will check things out at the weekend.

again, thanks for the advice. :)

Today I've had the plugs out and cleaned.
Dizzy cap off and cleaned.
Timed as per Mr.Fs advice.

It's now lumpier than it was before and it doesn't really settle as it did before at 3000rpm. It's a hell of a worse at low revs.

Any more ideas? Please

Checked ECU codes and all clear.

:(

Re-timed and back to how it was with power over 3000rpm.
Might have to give up and hand it to an expert :(

Is there any chance that the fundamental cam timing is out due to improper timing belt installation?

Sorry. the reason for the HUH? is I have no idea what you are you saying, (Probably the beer) It's late

But the belts haven't moved, I just changed the hose and stat, no belts removed,

I'm really confused, and really miffed off, coz it should be running right, and it's bang on 10 degs at idle

Airflow meter?

Would be worth checking. Mine ran like a bag of s**t when I forgot to connect mine. Could find the terminals need a good dry and clean.

Another thing to try is a leak test on the vacuum pipes. Get yourself some WD40 and lightly spray the various vacuum tubes etc. Also try between the intake collector and head. If the revs start blipping up and down you have found your leak.

Cheers

I don't know much about Z31s (good start huh ?) but any earths down that right hand side ?
Other than that back to basics ? Got compression ? fuel at the injectors/rail ? good spark ?

The shudder is probably the engine attempting to stall under load.

Thanks for the input Cam

I have fuel/spark but haven't checked compression.

I gave up and put in the garage last week. There's a guy I know in Bersham Wrexham, with a modded Z32 that he did himself, and there's an R33 and some S13s there too, so I guess he knows what he's doing.

I'll find out more tomorrow hopefully
