Matching numbers important!?

California Datsun - Al is the owner and he has a pretty bad reputation. Do a search on facebook and you will find lot said about him and his company. Having said this, I bought my silver car from him and it is the best car I've ever imported. That's why I'm keeping it.

Yes, I've read quite a few of those comments elsewhere too. But as you say, I've bought lots of bits from him and all good so far, so luck of the draw. It does seem obscene to be buying an engine from across an ocean though! ;)

Rob and status - interesting that you managed to go that far and have a reliable car. Testament to the block being strong.

So, here's a question that I can't answer: I read somewhere that the Z has a special honing pattern of sorts - does that mean few machine shops can cope with it?

I'm not after mega BHP as I kind of like the character of the car but a little more never hurts, especially with going from dished to flat top pistons for the extra compression / torque and say a 1mm overbore.

Any thoughts on cams for a higher compression slightly raised displacement? Would it be advisable to go slightly longer duration to help breath better at top end? Someone once said 274 degree cams are good for a z but would that lose all that lovely low end torque given it's 254 stock?

Mr Farmer - glad you are happy with yours - it's a lovely car and now I bet she goes better too!

I know two people who've bought engines and had them crated over - no issues but that was 5 yrs agao and people and their attitudes to customers/circumstances can change over time - I have no recent refererences.

Ali, you'd get your block bored for £150
Crank check £30
Bearings £200
Pistons £250ish
Block clean £40
other items £100
Assembed bottom end 7(surely tops) hours at 40 an hour?

So cheaper than bringing a block across?

I'm not an expert. And if you want to disagree that's fine but please substantiate your argument sir !

I was being somewhat sarcastic  (neither of us are)

I don't have links to hand (I'll try and find them later) however been a few highly modified cars sell for strong money through BAT recently if my memory serves me correctly. Resto mod seems to be a bigger emerging market these days.

To the 'right buyer' I'm sure a modified car will sell for good money as I'm sure an original one will to the 'right buyer'....

What the fashion is in the USA is not in the UK and again different from Europe and bear in mind that when a UK RHD car has been butchered (sorry, let's says swapped and/or flared, it can never be replaced - there were a finite number of RHD cars imported.

A modified (ie resto-mod) yes, an original car - yes although I'm not convinced these command the prices of , say, an MZR car.

But swaps and/or flares fall into neither category......they are today's custom-tuned cars and I very much doubt that an owner will recuperate what he invested. Obviously, that is not their aim and they haven't brought up the subject of values....

Got to go with what Franky says. I gave you the actual costs for my engine a while ago and they were in the same ball park. Plus you would get more satisfaction doing it your self. You did a fantastic job of that radio so an engine would be no trouble for you it's a lot simpler.

Thanks Huw - I'm seriously thinking now! But of course it will get expensive as I will demand high end components ;)

Smiley, when you bought your car did you consider if it had matching numbers?

However that LHD red car that's been for sale for a loooong time, ex Chrisvega and Vietnam serviceman? should have 'matching numbers' really to help justify the asking price.
