This years event is well underway , now in day two of day 10 ! This event is what I call a proper rally, not your stages run around a dis-used runway etc etc

Pre-start news !

MOMBASA - THE FINAL COUNTDOWN
This year celebrates the tenth anniversary of the first East African Safari Classic rally and it looks set to be a classic event in every sense of the word. This was reflected in the turnout and warm reception at the ceremonial start under the tusks in Moi Avenue, Mombasa this afternoon.

Indeed the bi-annual East African Safari Classic is so popular that many competitors just keep coming back for more, such as the Belgian driver Albert Michels and the Kenyan co-driver Crispin Sassoon who have competed on all five events. It seems the Safari bug is one disease for which there’s no antidote.

The last of the cars were scrutineered this morning and the number on the start list currently remains at forty-six with no further withdrawals. Porsche 911s are in the majority with 21 of the crews driving the Stuttgart marque, whilst Fords make up fourteen of the cars and a further nine crews are driving Datsuns. The remaining two rather more “alternative” cars are a Mercedes 450SLC and a Colt Lancer GSR. Top-seeded crew, Ian Duncan and Amaar Slatch, have swapped the Ford Mustang in which they won the last East African Safari Classic for a four-speed Ford Capri. Preparation on the car started before the last event in 2009, but it has yet to be driven in anger on a rally. Duncan, who was recently crowned Kenyan Rally Champion for the sixth time, is acutely aware of the strong competition in this year’s event. “It’s going to be difficult,” he said. “There are some really competitive crews on my tail and some very well prepared cars.” Indeed chief scrutineer Karl-Heinz Goldstein has remarked on the high level of professional preparation of the crews this year. “There were no major issues at scrutineering,” he commented.

However the second-seeded Porsche 911 of Gérard Marcy and Stéphane Prévot was sounding a little unwell and not idling properly at low revs just before scrutineering but they hope to have it fixed by tomorrow. Gregoire De Mevius and Alain Guehennec are third on the start list in their Kronos Vintage prepared Porsche 911 followed by former World Rally Champion Björn Waldegård who seems very satisfied with his Tuthill-prepared Porsche. “We tested the car in Morocco earlier this year,” he said. “And we’ve made a number of changes on the basis of this…But the real test will be on the event itself.”

Behind him on the start list is another Swedish hero and former World Rally Champion in the form of Stig Blomqvist. He will be co-driven by Venezuelan Ana Goni who co-drove on the East African Safari Classic with Blomqvist in 2005 and 2007 and with Michèle Mouton in 2003. She is clearly another competitor who has been bitten by the Safari bug. “I’m really looking forward to the event,” said Goni. “But it looks set to be one of the hardest yet. Not only in terms of the competition but also in terms of the conditions. I’ve heard there has been a fair amount of rain in some places on the route.” For another female co-driver, Fabrizia Pons, this is her first time on the classic version of the event although she has competed in many Safaris during the 80’s and 90’s, most famously with rally legend Michèle Mouton. If co-driving on the Safari wasn’t hard enough, she has another challenge to face as she has two drivers - Travis Pastrana and Patrick Njiru – who will be swapping half way through the event. “I’m very happy to be back on the Safari,” she said.

The ceremonial start went smoothly except for the crew of Jayant Shah and Lofty Drews. Having changed the gearbox on their Datsun 260Z earlier, the clutch failed on the start line which means they will already have incurred penalties for lateness when they start tomorrow. The drivers are attending their briefing back at the Sarova Whitesands Hotel in Mombasa before heading off for the welcome cocktail party. The Kenya Airways non-executive Chairman, Evanson Mwaniki, will be giving a speech as well as Clerk of the Course Surinder Thatti. The event patron Peter Hughes will also be attending, who has competed in 14 Safari rallies, including a win in 1964 in a Cortina GT. It seems that nearly fifty years on from Hughes’ win, the enduring attraction of the Safari rally is set to continue

AMBOSELI – KILIMA CAMP – QUOTES FROM THE CREWS

1 Ian Duncan / Amaar Slatch (Ford Capri)
“We got lost for about a minute in the second section and hit a rock in the last section but there’s been no problems with the car”

2 Gerard Marcy / Stephane Prévot (Porsche 911)
“There was some really bad mud at the end of the last competitive section but we’ve had a big problem with power all day. We’ve tried changing everything but it still isn’t fixed and it also seems to be overheating.”

3 Grégoire de Mévius / Alain Guehennec (Porsche 911)
“The first section was very fast and I was a bit scared. The second section was slower and we managed to catch Marcy at the end. On the third section we discovered the famous black cotton mud and hit a stone but luckily it was a rolling one!”

4 Bjorn Waldegård / Mathias Waldegård (Porsche 911)
“It was fantastic – a full Safari in one day. The first section was first, the second twisty and the third was slippery like hell for the last 30 km.”

5 Stig Blomqvist / Ana Goni (Ford Escort RS 1800)
“We were lying fifth after the first two sections and broke the differential about 50 or 60 km into the last section. Not nice for the first day but we’re here – that’s the main thing.”

6 Steve Perez / Staffan Parmander (Datsun 260Z)
“We broke the propshaft in the second section and fixed it ourselves. By the time we got to the last section there was a traffic jam in the mud and we were stuck for quite a while.”

7 Geoff Bell / Tim Challen (Datsun 260Z)
“A great day – we lost it in the last section and found ourselves facing the other direction but hopefully we didn’t lose too much time. And I think I’m still ahead of Steve (Perez) and Andrew (Siddall) in the Gentleman’s World Rally Championship!”

8 Alastair Cavenagh / Carl Tundo (Ford Escort Mark 2)
“We had steering rack problems in the second section and got bogged down in the third section. Oh, and we also lost the rear windscreen.”

9 Andrew Siddall / Mike Borissow (Datsun 260 Z)
“We boiled the car on the first section but we think it was just a sticky thermostat and then we got bogged down in the last section.”

10 John Lloyd / Adrian Cavenagh (Ford Escort RS 1800)
“The first two sections were great and we had no problems. On the last section we wrong-slotted and lost a fair bit of time but it was a great day.”

11 Aziz Tejpar / Andy Nagi (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“We ran out of fuel and got stuck in the last section.”

12 Simon Tysoe / Imran Khan (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“On the second section we bent the steering arm and got two punctures and in the third section we got stuck in the mud. I think there may be lots of work to be done on the car tonight.”

14 Steven Funk / Andrew Doig (Porsche 911)
“Awesome! The biggest problem is I can’t figure out how I’m in the top ten. It was so absolutely wonderful NOT to get stuck in the mud although getting around the other cars was difficult.”

15 Jürgen Bertl / Bernhard Ettel (Porsche 911)
“In the second section we overtook car 14 but we then hit a big bump and went flying like a missile and landed on the nose. In the last section we managed to lose the rear bumper in the mud.”

16 Thomas Flohr /Didier Breton (Porsche 911)
“The second section was beautiful in the Taita Hills and fantastically slippery on the way down. In the third section the mud was very deep in places and it was just a question of survival!”

17 Steve Troman / Calvin Cooledge (Porsche 911)
“I was going a bit too fast over a jump and then went sideways and off the road. We hit the front very hard and snapped the steering.”

18 Aslam Khan / Arshad Khan (Porsche 911)
“The second section was very rough through the hills and in the third section it was very wet and we had to get a tow but the car seems fine.”

19 Jean-Pierre Mondron / Nicolas Gilsoul (Porsche 911)
“The Taita hills were rough and the end of the last section was full of mud but we had lots of fun.”

20 Louis Antonini / Pierre Antonini (Porsche 911)
“We were stuck for about an hour on the last section.”

21 Jayant Shah / Lofty Drews (Datsun 260 Z)
“Yesterday was a disaster and today was a disaster.” (Lofty Drews)

22 Richard Jackson / Preston Ayres (Porsche 911)
“First section was okay but we had problems with the left strut on second section and then got stuck in the last section.”

23 Thierry de Latre de Bosqueau / Eric Werner (Porsche 911)
“It was a long, tough today. We broke the torsion bar after the second section and in the third section we missed a turning then got stuck three times in the black cotton.”

24 Travis Pastrana / Fabrizia Pons (Porsche 911)
“It was a really good day. We saw zebra and the mud was an amazing adventure. The first section was very fast and the second was very technical which was where we were fastest. In the third section we ran over a shrub which was hiding a rock and got a puncture on the front right”

25 Mark Bentley / Edward Bentley (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“The first section was excellent and we managed to miss getting stuck in the third section.”

26 Marzio Kravos / Renzo Bernardi (Ferrari Dino 308 GT4)
“Everything was okay.”

27 Rommy Bamrah / Harvey Jutley (Datsun 260Z)

28 Nick Mason / Alex Horsey (Datsun 260Z)
“In the last section we rolled after a massive ditch. We managed to roll all the way over but then got stuck in the sand and Richard Arrowsmith towed us out.”

29 Albert Michiels / Patrick de Coninck (Porsche 911)
“There was a little mud! Usually on the Dakar we have sand but here it is mud!”

31 Jacques Walens / Thierry Lacroix (Porsche 911)

32 Kulwinder Sandhu / Harpal Singh Sudle (Datsun P710)
“First two sections were okay and then we got stuck for 15 minutes on the last section.”

33 Richard Arrowsmith / Norris Midwood (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“The first section was very fast and on the second section we had an off at the top of the Taitas and lost about three minutes. In the third section we stopped to pull Nick Mason out of a mudhole and, as a result, we seem to have acquired a fake tan (referring to the red/orange mud on their legs)”

34 Jac Nellemann / Joseph Huber (Porsche 911)
“The first two sections were okay then we got stuck for twenty minutes in the last section, but we made it and that’s the main thing.”

35 Minesh Rathod / Sachin Sumaria (Colt Lancer GSR)
“It was lovely. We got two punctures – one on the second section and one on the third – and then we helped Jayant Shah and Lofty Drews.”

37 Phillipe Vandromme / Frederic Vivier (Porsche 911)
“The first section was great, the second section was rough and there was a lot of mud in the last section but overall a good day.”

38 Jonathan Somen / Richard Hechle (Ford Escort Mark 2)

39 Ramesh Vishram / Atul Kochhar (Ford Escort Mark 2)
“It was a good day but we had a bit of an issue on the last section. We got stuck and slipped the clutch.”

40 Arron Banks / Tim Chesser (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“This is my first rally and it’s definitely interesting! We rolled once and then got stuck in the mud in the last section. We went round in all directions!”

42 Josef Jobst / Hans Greifenstein (Porsche 911)
“We missed a junction in the second section and got stuck for an hour in the last section.”

43 Peter Stoehr / Crispin Sassoon (Datsun 1600SSS)
“It was a good first day. We helped push car number 44 in the mud and then drove through ourselves. We had to change the radiator because it was overheating.”

44 Kurt A Engelhorn / Johan Nel (Ford Escort Mark 1)

45 Franz Wunderlich / Klaus-Peter Kristek (Porsche 911 )
“It was very good. In the last section we had half a meter of mud and got stuck. It was a hard, long day.”

46 Jean-Michel Martin / Ronain Martin (Ford Escort Mark 2)
Ronain Martin: “It’s my first ever rally so I’m very excited. I had a fantastic day apart from the mud but we were only stuck for a few minutes.”

47 Bernhard Kessel / Ronny Kessel (Porsche 911)

48 Paolo Faldini / Nicolas Beech (Porsche 911)
“Absolutely brilliant until the last 10 km of the last section. There were three cars stuck in front of us and being towed out. We must have got stuck about five times.”

51 Samira Khan / Anita Irwin (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“On the second section we passed two cars but then we got stuck in the mud.”

52 Quentin Savage / Russell Savage (Datsun 180B)
“It was a good day until the mud

The eagle eyed amongst you will recognise no 32, forum user Hatari in yet another different datsun:thumbs:

Looks like the Datsun challenge has faded...Perez in his $$$$ zed snapped a propshaft and that has virtually lost him any chance of a top 3. Geoff Bell perhaps has a chance , he was very consistent last year in a datsun 180B, so with a more powerful car should be able to keep up with the leaders..

ARUSHA – MOUNT MERU HOTEL – MORE MUD, WATER AND ADVENTURE

The vocabulary used by the competitors of the Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally was nothing but creative as they emerged from the first section of the second day of this epic event. Near the end of the 112 km section, which ran along the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro, competitors met with the results of a flash flood. Some crews called it a lake, others a river, whilst “a large puddle”, “a swamp” and “a hell hole” were just a few of the other phrases used to describe it. Many crews got stuck and those that did get through volunteered a variety of reasons for their success, ranging from driver talent, navigational skill and sheer luck.

First crew on the road, Bjorn and Mathias Waldegård, kept their Swedish cool and drove their Porsche 911 through the first competitive section with no problems. “It was a lake,” Waldegård said. “I guess it must have been flooding from the mountain and it was tough business.” However, being the first through the section can also be tough on timing and they set only fourth fastest time, pushing them down to second place overall. Second crew on the road this morning, Grégoire de Mévius and Alain Guehennec saw Waldegård successfully fording the water in the distance and decided to give it a try, making second fastest time which pulled them up to the overall lead. “I thought since we’re in the same car (Porsche 911) we should be able to make it,” de Mevius said. Meanwhile local heroes Ian Duncan and Ammar Slatch set fastest time in their Ford Capri on the section by nearly half a minute but it wasn’t enough to improve their third overall place from last night. “It was a river,” Duncan said. “I don’t know how Bjorn found his way through and it definitely kept our attention.” The other former World Rally Champion in the rally, Stig Blomqvist who is co-driven by Ana Goni, got third fastest time on the section, beating his fellow Swede Waldegård on that section and pulling him up the field.

However many of the other competitors did not manage to get through the water and mud with plenty getting stuck and requiring help from either locals or other competitors. Thomas Flohr and John Lloyd were both unfortunate victims, losing their sixth and ninth overall position respectively due to spending nearly two hours stuck in the section. Meanwhile X-Games hero Travis Pastrana and co-driver Fabrizia Pons found an alternative place to get stuck right at the beginning of the section. “We picked our own place,” Pastrana said. “It was a very difficult place to get stuck and it definitely took skill!” However they only lost about three or four minutes and remained in sixth place overall after the section.

Due to heavy rains and flooding in the night, the organisers decided to cancel the second section of the day as they felt there had been enough hardship for the competitors. Instead the cars drove to Arusha before going out on the third shorter competitive section which, at 37 km of dry route, proved to be a relatively easy ride for most crews. “That section was beautiful,” said Waldegård. “There were a few bad drifts and it was rocky but it was nice and open so you could see everything. I liked that section.” Indeed his affection for the section was reflected in his time, as he was over twenty seconds faster than De Mevius which put him back in the overall lead at the end of the second day, but only by three seconds. “That section was very nice,” commented De Mevius who is now second overall. “Small but intense and on the shorter sections we can try a bit harder.” Making up the top three was Duncan who set the third fastest time on the section and remained in third place overall at the end of the day. There is now less than two minutes between the top three, while Geoff Bell and Tim Challen are about fifteen minutes behind the leader in their Datsun 260Z, followed by Gérard Marcy and Stephane Prévot who broke a driveshaft on their Porsche 911 on a road section and are still suffering some problems with their power. Travis Pastrana remains in sixth place overall at the end of the day.

QUOTES FROM THE CREWS

1 Ian Duncan / Amaar Slatch (Ford Capri)
“It was a bit of a river in the first section – I don’t know how Bjorn found his way through and it definitely held our attention. There was a lot of powder dust in the last section but there were no problems”

2 Gérard Marcy / Stephane Prévot (Porsche 911)
We were stuck in the water for a few minutes on the first section but then the driveshaft broke on the road section. Our problem with the power is better but not perfect. The last section was more flowing and much better although I still have a few problems with the power”

3 Grégoire de Mévius / Alain Guehennec (Porsche 911)
“The first section was very nice – fast but not too rough – and then we saw the water. In the distance we saw Bjorn going through okay and since we’re in the same car we decided we could also pass. The second section was very nice – small and intense – when it’s shorter you can try a bit harder.”

4 Bjorn Waldegård / Mathias Waldegård (Porsche 911)
“It was a lake in the first section and I guess it was some flooding from the mountain. It was tough business. The last section was beautiful – I liked that stage – a reasonable route with a few bad drifts and rocks but it wasn’t dangerous. It was open so you could see everything. More of those please!”

5 Stig Blomqvist / Ana Goni (Ford Escort RS 1800)
“We made it through the hell hole in the first section and the car’s okay today. The last section was okay but it was full of rocks.”

6 Steve Perez / Staffan Parmander (Datsun 260Z)
“It was a little bit tricky in the mud on the first section but my very experienced Swedish co-driver gave me some verbal instructions. Apparently in that kind of conditions you need to apply the same principles as snow-mobiling and that was what we did! The last section was easy peasy in comparison. It seemed short but 37 km is a long section in England!”

7 Geoff Bell / Tim Challen (Datsun 260Z)
“It was quite tough in the first section and the mud was bad. We had no brakes for a long way due to overheating but then they cooled right down in the water! The last section was perfect – no problem at all.”

8 Alastair Cavenagh / Carl Tundo (Ford Escort Mark 2)
“We’ve had all sorts of problems today. We had a misfire at the start of the section and had to keep jump-starting it – I think we spent more time out of the car than inside the car! Amazingly we had no problem in the water. The second section was much better.”

9 Andrew Siddall / Mike Borissow (Datsun 260 Z)
“We had a puncture on the first, which was a driver’s fault. On the second we had a clear run without any trouble. It was our first clear run in the rally so we were almost excited!”

10 John Lloyd / Adrian Cavenagh (Ford Escort RS 1800)
“The end of the last section was awful! It was a flowing river when we went through and then an hour later it had dried up. We found Thomas Flohr in a mudhole and then parked ourselves next to him. We must have been there for about two hours which was two hours too many! In the last section we didn’t get stuck or lost and we didn’t have a puncture so all was good.”

11 Aziz Tejpar / Andy Nagi (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“It wasn’t too bad on the first section and we managed to criss-cross the swamp. It was pretty interesting!”

12 Simon Tysoe / Imran Khan (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“It was alright – better than yesterday when we ripped two wheels and bent an axle. We’ve changed our tactics and decided that we were trying too hard yesterday so today we’ve been taking it easy.”
From co-driver Imran Khan: “I’m trying to Africanise my driver so he will take his time. Pole Pole!”

14 Travis Clarke / Andrew Doig (Porsche 911) – Clarke, who is Travis Pastrana’s agent, took the place of Steven Funk for today. He also races off road cars in Mexico.
“We passed ten cars in the mud at the end of the first section and picked an excellent route.”

15 Jürgen Bertl / Bernhard Ettel (Porsche 911)
They had engine problems in the first section and were pulled out by photographer Reinhard Klein. The car came in with the rear bumper missing and the engine not sounding too well and cutting out at the time control.

16 Thomas Flohr /Didier Breton (Porsche 911)
“It wasn’t a road at the end of the first section. It was a river or a lake. We must have been stuck for about two hours. The last section was beautiful – nice and fast with no problems for us.”

17 Steve Troman / Michael Nutt (Porsche 911)
“I’ve got a new co-driver today as Calvin hurt his back yesterday and we decided it was best that he didn’t continue. We got a bit lost in the first section but we didn’t get stuck and Michael is doing very well.”
Michael is enjoying his new role but admitted having a few errors navigating.

18 Aslam Khan / Arshad Khan (Porsche 911)
“We got stuck for an hour and a half in the first section and spent a lot of time in the swap but that’s rallying! I think the Masai got a lot of work today.”

19 Jean-Pierre Mondron / Nicolas Gilsoul (Porsche 911)
“The first section was beautiful but like yesterday there was a surprise at the end – we spent fifteen minutes going very slowly but got through. On the second the navigation was difficult but my co-driver showed me the way very well. There are three Kronos cars in the top ten which is a good result.”

20 Louis Antonini / Pierre Antonini (Porsche 911)
The car suffered electronic problems last night and was towed to Arusha and didn’t compete today.

21 Jayant Shah / Lofty Drews (Datsun 260 Z)
“The gearbox is fixed and we did not have any problems today apart from the mud where we got stuck. There was quite a lot of pushing in that first section.”

22 Richard Jackson / Preston Ayres (Porsche 911)
“We didn’t go quickly on the first section but we got through. When we got to the end seven cars were stuck and we managed to find a way through which was much better than yesterday when we were stuck for 25 minutes.”

23 Thierry de Latre de Bosqueau / Eric Werner (Porsche 911)
“After the first section we were very happy! It was very hard work in the mud and the water. For the second section it was very nice – fast and rough but something that beginners can do.”

24 Travis Pastrana / Fabrizia Pons (Porsche 911)
“It was very muddy in the first section but we didn’t get stuck where everyone else did. We picked our own place right at the beginning where it took skill to get stuck! There was no mud in the last section – it was dry and nice. We caught the car in front and were in its dust for at least the last 15 kilometres but thought it best to back off.”

25 Mark Bentley / Edward Bentley (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“It was okay until the end and then it was a little wet! When we saw the other cars getting stuck we cut through a field and lost a few minutes. After yesterday we’re taking it dead steady.”

26 Marzio Kravos / Renzo Bernardi (Ferrari Dino 308 GT4)
“John Lloyd who was already stuck in the last section gave us the wrong direction and we were stuck for an hour!!”

27 Rommy Bamrah / Harvey Jutley (Datsun 260Z)
“We broke our differential twice yesterday and fixed it this morning and came straight to Arusha to do the last section where there no major problems. Our third differential is finally working but it did start raining half-way through the section.”

28 Nick Mason / Alex Horsey (Datsun 260Z)
“The first section was fine – a great section. Our brakes went so I had to drive slowly but that probably turned out for the best! The last section was fine – we still had no brakes and a wobbly suspension so we were taking it easy. Compared to yesterday it’s been uneventful!”

29 Albert Michiels / Patrick de Coninck (Porsche 911)
“Everything went okay despite the mud!”

31 Jacques Walens / Thierry Lacroix (Porsche 911)
“Today was very good – a lot better than yesterday. This is my first ever rally so it was nice to have a better day.”

32 Kulwinder Sandhu / Harpal Singh Sudle (Datsun P710)
“Not bad. The first section was okay and we got stuck for five minutes but that was it. Apart from that the car is running well. It is just underpowered, but we are doing well in the overall results.”

33 Richard Arrowsmith / Norris Midwood (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“We went well in the first section and didn’t get stuck but we broke the anti-roll bar somewhere in the mud.”
Co-driver Norris Midwood was very excited after the second section: “We missed a baboon, a donkey and a herd of goats but we got an LBJ (little brown jobby).”

34 Jac Nellemann / Joseph Huber (Porsche 911)
“We are taking it cautiously and follow the slogan ‘what you see is what you get’. Sometimes the pace notes have some surprises.”

35 Minesh Rathod / Sachin Sumaria (Colt Lancer GSR)
“A nice day. We were stuck at the start of the first section in the mudholes but remarkably fine at the end, which is the other way around from most people.

37 Phillipe Vandromme / Frederic Vivier (Porsche 911)
“The first section was very good and I think we were in eighth place overall afterwards. The second stage was too short, like a prologue. We did not have any problems today.”

38 Jonathan Somen / Richard Hechle (Ford Escort Mark 2)
“The first section was fun. I think we were one of the few who got through and we’ve got full mud tyres on today. The second section was fine and it’s nice to have the car back unlike yesterday.”

39 Ramesh Vishram / Atul Kochhar (Ford Escort Mark 2)
“The first section was not bad but a bit rough and a bit wet but we managed to make it through. The second section was very nice – dry and a bit rough but no problems.”

40 Arron Banks / Tim Chesser (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“On the first section we saw a lot of water and sand but we definitely weren’t on the beach. We managed to go round the river at the end of the first section but then couldn’t find the road and ended up on a dry river bed where we got stuck in quick sand. The Masai pulled us out but then we hit a rock and broke both steering arms! The second section was nice and we had no problems.”

42 Josef Jobst / Hans Greifenstein (Porsche 911)
“The car is running very well unlike yesterday when we had only problems: the bolt came away from the king pin in a competitive section and we had to wait for service then we got stuck twice in the mud. Our only problem today was our starting position. After yesterday’s problem we had to start way down the field. We overtook four cars in the first section and one on the second section. Next time we need a louder horn!”

43 Peter Stoehr / Crispin Sassoon (Datsun 1600SSS)
“We didn’t get stuck in the first section and we had no problems today.”

44 Kurt A Engelhorn / Johan Nel (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“Today was very good. The first section was fantastic until we got stuck and the second section was a lot of fun. ”

45 Franz Wunderlich / Klaus-Peter Kristek (Porsche 911 )
“The first section was good and we didn’t have a problem with the water. After the second section we washed the car but now the starter motor is not working anymore. I am actually quite happy the middle section was cancelled. This rally is already quite exhausting!”

46 Jean-Michel Martin / Ronain Martin (Ford Escort Mark 2)
“After we lost time in the mud we lost concentration and hit a rock collecting a puncture on the front right tyre. Then we helped Aslam Khan who was stopped in his Porsche at the same spot with a puncture but had left his jack when he was stuck in the mud.”

47 Bernhard Kessel / Ronny Kessel (Porsche 911)

48 Paolo Faldini / Nicolas Beech (Porsche 911)
“The first section was excellent. We found a good way through the cars but at one point we were going uphill and against the current, which was very tricky! The second stage was excellent and superfast. I really liked it.”

51 Samira Khan / Anita Irwin (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“We’re going okay. We got stuck in the mud again on the first section for about 20 minutes but then we overtook another car on the last part of the section, which we thoroughly enjoyed! The second section was great but half way through we got caught by a Porsche and then were stuck in its dust for a while.”

52 Quentin Savage / Russell Savage (Datsun 180B)
“The first three-quarters of the first section were awesome and then we got stuck for about 40 minutes, tried to help some others who were stuck and then had to employ some locals to push us out. The afternoon section was fine, no problems at all.”

Ok and a few more pics

The eagle eyed amongst you will recognise no 32, forum user Hatari in yet another different datsun:thumbs:

Looks like the Datsun challenge has faded...Perez in his $$$$ zed snapped a propshaft and that has virtually lost him any chance of a top 3. Geoff Bell perhaps has a chance , he was very consistent last year in a datsun 180B, so with a more powerful car should be able to keep up with the leaders..
the spectacle of Bell "beating" the boss is an entertaining one.:D

Perez in his $$$$ zed
You missed out some $$$s from that figure.
Its astonomical:eek:

Todays instalment - well I am dissapointed as the local challenge has faded and sadly it looks like an "overseas" driver will win this event...shame really.

Anyway, here goes...

The two leading Porsches of Bjorn Waldegård and Grégoire de Mévius have been swapping positions throughout the third day of the Kenya Airways East African Safari Classic Rally. The first 154 km long competitive section took some casualties, including current Kenyan Rally Champion Ian Duncan who was lying in third place before he was overtaken by one of the rear wheels of his Ford Capri. The wheel studs broke which meant he had to keep swapping them, losing him an hour and a half in the section. “We had to keep stealing them off the other wheels,” he said. “And then they fell off again.”
Grégoire de Mévius and Alain Guehennec set the fastest time on the first section of the day in their Porsche 911, beating Bjorn and Mathias Waldegård by 28 seconds and snatching the overall lead from the Swedish crew. The Waldegård crew had an extra obstacle in this first section in the form a closed barrier whose keeper was absent from their post. “Luckily our horn was working so we eventually got his attention,” said Waldegård. “But we lost some time.” With Duncan temporarily out of the competitive picture, another Porsche 911 moved up into third place at the hands of Gérard Marcy and Stephane Prévot.
The second section of the day started on the flood plains of Lake Manyara at the bottom of the Rift Valley, ending with a very steep, twisty and narrow climb up the escarpment. On this technical section Waldegård was fastest but only by a second from de Mevius, meaning the Belgian driver kept the overall lead, despite the engine on his Porsche 911 cutting out for a few seconds. This was the start of a problem that would end up worsening and costing him the lead. Third fastest on this second section was Stig Blomqvist and Ana Goni in their Ford Escort.
The third section was wider and smoother with much higher speeds, finishing off nearby the gate of the Ngorogoro Crater. Waldegård set fastest time by nearly a minute on this section whilst the electrical problems encountered by de Mevius in the second section exacerbated. “We had a misfire,” he said. “And then 12 km before the end we stopped. We checked everything then removed the rev counter which seemed to solve the problem but we lost a fair amount of time.” This put Waldegård in first place overall by nearly eight minutes from de Mevius. Marcy remained in third place but over twenty minutes behind the top two. “We’re still losing a lot of time because of the low torque,” said the Belgian. “Especially in these more hilly sections but I still love this rally and feel very lucky to be here.” Behind Marcy by only a minute are Geoff Bell and Tim Challen in their Datsun 260Z who have been dicing with the third placed Porsche 911 crew all day. Unfortunately the Ford Capri of Duncan had further problems on the third section, pushing him further down the field.
Luck wasn’t on the side of Thomas Flohr and Didier Breton again today and neither was one of their front wheels for the last five kilometres of the first section. However they drove out of the section with the co-driver re-distributing the weight of the Porsche 911 by standing on the opposite side of the bumper. Travis Pastrana and Fabrizia Pons also suffered wheel problems on the last section when the stub axle sheared and they had to drive the last 60 km of the section on three wheels. Having suffered suspension issues in the first section of the day this has put them down the field. However their Race4Change teammates Bjorn and Mathias Waldegård are now in the lead and another Race4Change car has moved up to fifth place. Today this car was driven by Steven Funk for first two competitive sections and by co-driver Andrew Doig for the last section, giving Mary-Ellen Iskendrian from the Race4Change support crew the chance to co-drive.
Meanwhile there were several crews climbing up the field, including Stig Blomqvist and Ana Goni who moved up from fifteenth place to seventh place in their Ford Escort. After previous problems, Kick Rally teammates Steve Perez and Andrew Siddall have also been moving up the field in their Datsun 260Zs. In fact they were both equal seventh on the second section – now that’s team work! Perez has moved up eleven places to tenth position.
There are now three Porsche 911s in the top three but it is still only the third day of this amazing rally, which is known for its demands on endurance. With the full 260 of competitive kilometres being run today, the crews will be looking forward to a good rest tonight before they tackle the fourth day that will take in 323 km competitive kilometres before arriving at Ol Tukai lodge in Amboseli.
DAY 3. ARUSHA – MOUNT MERU – QUOTES FROM THE CREWS
1 Ian Duncan / Amaar Slatch (Ford Capri)
“The wheel studs went on the first section so we had to keep stealing them from the other wheels but then they fell off again. The second section was okay and on the third we had problems with the propeller shaft.”
2 Gerard Marcy / Stephane Prévot (Porsche 911)
“Not a good day. We are losing a lot of time in these higher sections with our continuing loss of power. But I still love this rally and feel lucky to be here.”
3 Grégoire de Mévius / Alain Guehennec (Porsche 911)
“A mixed day. The first section was very good and we were nearly equal time with Bjorn on the second section even though the engine cut out for a few seconds. On the third section we started having a misfire and then 12 km before the end we stopped. We checked a number of things then removed the rev counter and it started car but we must have lost at least six or seven minutes.”
4 Bjorn Waldegård / Mathias Waldegård (Porsche 911)
“It was a good day but we had a bit of drama in the first section when we had to pass a barrier and it was closed. We had to get the man’s attention with our horn and must have lost about 10 seconds.”
5 Stig Blomqvist / Ana Goni (Ford Escort RS 1800)
“Today was okay and no problems.”
From Ana Goni: “It was a straightforward day. My back didn’t enjoy that first long section but we survived so I’m happy.”
6 Steve Perez / Staffan Parmander (Datsun 260Z)
“We had a pretty good day. The last section was like driving on ice because it was so slippery on the surface so my Swedish co-driver was very helpful. We encountered lots of animals: cows, wilderbeast and donkeys.”
7 Geoff Bell / Tim Challen (Datsun 260Z)
“The first section was full of adventure: we hit a tree and stopped for a couple of minutes when Marcy passed us. Then we were stuck behind him and eventually got past but just after we overtook there was a 90 right and I didn’t quite make it so we span and got a puncture and then Marcy overtook us again. But we had a nice clean run on the last two sections.”
8 Alastair Cavenagh / Carl Tundo (Ford Escort Mark 2)
“Today was not a good day. The car simply would not start and we had to push-start it all the time. We got late into the first section and stalled it. We had no problems in the second section and spun in the third and stalled the engine again.”
9 Andrew Siddall / Mike Borissow (Datsun 260 Z)
“A brilliant day with three clean sections. I spun on the third section – a big lorry was going round the hairpins and I took my eye off the road. We haven’t had a limited slip differential for the last two days but now we’ve got a proper diff things are a lot better than the last two days.”
10 John Lloyd / Adrian Cavenagh (Ford Escort RS 1800)
“Unfortunately we got lost on the first section and lost twenty five minutes and then the coil went. The last two sections were very good.”
11 Aziz Tejpar / Andy Nagi (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“The first section was a little bit rough, sections two and three were OK. It is all good so far. We have no problems with the car, only with the driver. He is too slow!”
12 Simon Tysoe / Imran Khan (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“We had a good day with no problems. The first section we really enjoyed with a good mix of surfaces. For the other two we slowed down a little to make sure we finished – and enjoy the scenery! We’ve just got to keep going for the rest of the rally.”
14 Steven Funk / Andrew Doig / Mary-Ellen Iskendrian (Porsche 911)
“Awesome! The climb in the mountain was great and really beautiful. Even though I had my eyes fixed on the road I had a sense that it was beautiful! It felt beautiful. The river crossing in the second section was awesome and it was so great to see so many spectators out on the road.”
From Andrew Doig: “That was good fun. Yesterday I gave Mary-Ellen a crash course in co-driving and she seemed to pick it up instantly.”
15 Jürgen Bertl / Bernhard Ettel (Porsche 911)
“We drove into the first section and after 15 kilometres the engine cut off again, it was the same electrical problem that we already had yesterday. Then we were towed back to Arusha by some locals and we gave them some T-shirts. We have done everything to solve the problem and now the car is running again so we will start tomorrow.”
16 Thomas Flohr /Didier Breton (Porsche 911)
“Today we were driving in the dust for a very long time and 5 km from the end of the first section we clipped a wall on the side and ripped off our front left wheel including the brake. Didier then had to stand on the bumper until the finish. After that all went well and we were very fast.”
17 Steve Troman / Michael Nutt (Porsche 911)
“We had a near miss on the first section. There was a double caution ditch that we hit hard and flicked up and landed on the bull bar so it’s a bit mashed up. The other two sections were great.”
Co-driver Michael Nutt added: “I am getting used to it on my second day. We overtook four cars, Steve drove very well.”
18 Aslam Khan / Arshad Khan (Porsche 911)
“Today was very good. We were driving slowly and safely. We did not have any problems. We were just not happy with our starting position, we were too far down the field.”
19 Jean-Pierre Mondron / Nicolas Gilsoul (Porsche 911)
“A nice day with no problems. The first section was very long and the second I remember from 2009.”
20 Louis Antonini / Pierre Antonini (Porsche 911)
The crew didn’t start the day.
21 Jayant Shah / Lofty Drews (Datsun 260 Z)
Jayant and Lofty rolled their Datsun on a very fast section of the third section. When the car came to the end the crew had to crawl out of the passenger’s window. The crew were shaken, stirred but not injured.
22 Richard Jackson / Preston Ayres (Porsche 911)
“We had a good day. We had just two punctures and we stopped once when we saw Paolo (Faldini) standing next to the road with jump leads in his hands. We turned around to help him but he just waved to us to say we should continue.”
23 Thierry de Latre de Bosqueau / Eric Werner (Porsche 911)
“Very nice stages today with a lot of persity in terms of conditions. We discovered that it is very enjoyable to have a day without problems. It was a perfect, beautiful day.”
24 Travis Pastrana / Patrick Njiru / Fabrizia Pons (Porsche 911)
“We only had two kilometres without an issue! On the first section we blew out the shocks and probably damaged the wheel. In the second section I thought we had problems with the brakes as I could only use the handbrake and then the odometer went. When we went into the third section the whole wheel fell out. We drove out 60 kilometres on three wheels – well Fabrizia drove and I rode on the back to take the weight off the front.”
25 Mark Bentley / Edward Bentley (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“We’re here and that’s the important thing! We took it easy today. The engine was down on power so we think the air filter might have popped but then I might just be paranoid and it might just have been the altitude.”
26 Marzio Kravos / Renzo Bernardi (Mercedes 450SLC)
“For a change we had a great day. It was event-free with nothing exciting to tell. Apart from the fact that Jayant Shah rolled just in front of us. They were okay. Jayant was just climbing out of the window when we passed and Lofty was standing next to the car.”
27 Rommy Bamrah / Harvey Jutley (Datsun 260Z)
“We were running last car on the road and we had a lot of traffic today. But the overtaking was okay. We had a good run and not a problem.”
28 Nick Mason / Alex Horsey (Datsun 260Z)
“Today was just fantastic, we were doing very well. We had a puncture on the first section but apart from that it was all fine. We also stopped to see if Jayant (Shah) and Lofty (Drews) were alright - which they were so we carried on.”
29 Albert Michiels / Patrick de Coninck (Porsche 911)
“We had lots of problems with the shocks and lost a lot of time but now we’re ready for tomorrow.”
31 Jacques Walens / Thierry Lacroix (Porsche 911)
“Absolutely no problems. It was a very good day and a great rally but tomorrow is another day!”
32 Kulwinder Sandhu / Harpal Singh Sudle (Datsun P710)
“Not a bad day at all. The car is fine and we had no problems today. We are just taking it easy.”
33 Richard Arrowsmith / Norris Midwood (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“On the first section, we tried to regain our place from Steve Perez and missed a DNM which cost us about 25 minutes. The second section was brilliant and in the third section the steering wheel came loose so we stopped to tighten it and lost about three minutes. Then we ate Aslam Khan’s dust for 50 km.”
34 Jac Nellemann / Joseph Huber (Porsche 911)
“I think we drove the longest section of all the competitors because we went wrong in the first section and lost about 15 minutes. The navigation was very tricky on that section. Apart from that all went well today.”
35 Minesh Rathod / Sachin Sumaria (Colt Lancer GSR)
“We had no problems at all. All good. The first section was a little bit rough at the start but the other sections were nice.”
37 Phillipe Vandromme / Frederic Vivier (Porsche 911)
“In the first section we went over a tree and were pulled out by a matatu. In the second section there were no problems and the third was the most beautiful section with all the Masai and the fantastic colours.”
38 Jonathan Somen / Richard Hechle (Ford Escort Mark 2)
“Section two was the most incredible section that I have ever done. Unbelievable. We did not have a single problem today, just wonderful. If the next six days are like this I am a happy man.”
39 Ramesh Vishram / Atul Kochhar (Ford Escort Mark 2)
“We rolled the car in the first section. We met a motorcyclist and I had to go off the road to avoid him and rolled then a coil went but we sorted that in the section. There were no problems in the other two sections.”
40 Arron Banks / Tim Chesser (Ford Escort Mark 1)
42 Josef Jobst / Hans Greifenstein (Porsche 911)
Josef Jobst’s Porsche was towed in early. “On section one we went flat out through a dip which we had expected to be 200 metres later. We broke the torsion bar and both drive shafts and also bent the chassis. So there is a lot of work for our mechanics.”
43 Peter Stoehr / Crispin Sassoon (Datsun 1600SSS)
Co-driver Crispin Sassoon got out of the car saying “We just went shopping, we bought a necklace for Peter’s daughter. The stages were lovely I wish the whole rally would be like that. We did not have any problems.”
Peter Stoehr added: “Yes, apart from we broke two rims in the first section and then in the spirit of the event we pulled out Alastair Cavanagh. The last two sections were fantastic.”
44 Kurt A Engelhorn / Johan Nel (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“The most fantastic rally Out of Africa…no in Africa!”
45 Franz Wunderlich / Klaus-Peter Kristek (Porsche 911 )
“Sections two and three were really great to drive. It was just so much fun. We only had a puncture on the front right two kilometres from the finish of section one, so we were a bit lucky. Apart from that all is fine.”
46 Jean-Michel Martin / Ronain Martin (Ford Escort Mark 2)
Jean-Michel and Ronain arrived with the co-driver behind the steering wheel. “We just swapped for the road section. On the stages, Jean-Michel was driving. We had a perfect day with only two punctures on the left which we collected going over one sharp rock. But it was good because we only had to stop once.”
47 Bernhard Kessel / Ronny Kessel (Porsche 911)
48 Paolo Faldini / Nicolas Beech (Porsche 911)
“The first section was wonderful until 7 km before the finish when the alternator failed. It was flat and we had to push the car for 1.5 km before the road went downhill and we could get going again. Sections two and three went well. They were so nice, I wish I could do them again.”
51 Samira Khan / Anita Irwin (Ford Escort Mark 1)
“We were too cautious. We were caught by a couple of guys. But we have done no damage to the car and actually enjoyed it. Especially section one which had a bit of everything.”
52 Quentin Savage / Russell Savage (Datsun 180B)
“We caught up in another crew’s dust in the first section and hit an anthill and broke the front strut and arm. We had to wait for service and didn’t do the last two sections.”

Jayant shah and loft Drews rolled their 260Z...here is the evidence ! anyone fancy a bonnet?

You missed out some $$$s from that figure.
